Nuvi 3790t, all said and done, not to bad

I'm a delivery driver with about 90 places we deliver to. Got tired of pushing the down button on my old 765t till I could find the one I wanted. Loading my favorites from that to this was easy. But the 3790t sometimes gets stubborn and only goes down about 30 of them before she wants to go back and start from the top. That's frustrating, having to start all over. It does take a little longer to calculate, but that may be because of the trends and traffic. It has taken me on different routes from my old one. Bluetooth was easy to connect to, but I still can't get hands free dialing or my phone book to show up. I make few calls out though, so no big deal. Incoming calls go right thru to the Nuvi. My old one took some getting used to and I'm sure the more I use this I'll like it more and it will be easier. I can't give it an excellent because it does have some quirks that aren't due to me not understanding it. It is much easier talking to it than having to push every button to get it to do something.Read full review...

Nuvi 3790T Not so Great

This is my third (and least favorite) Garmin. I bought it because I was lured by the ultra-slim design and the 3D terrain and building views. The design is excellent and the product is as easy to use as my previous Garmins, but I've had several disappointments. First of all, so far in Canada there is no 3D effects, this changes at the border going into the States however, but there is no where on their site that explains this is a feature only available in the US. I've also been disappointed with the touch screen, which is not well calibrated, and there is no easy way to re-calibrate it.
Another gripe? I bought the Europe map and the city map for London. The Garmin took about 20 minutes to figure I'd left North America, but once it came in the mapping was fine. As for the city map, forget about it. I NEVER could get the Garmin to pick up a satellite in London, too many buildings I assume, so it was extremely frustrating trying to find my way around Londo with ths feature. Totally NOT worth the money. As for the Garmin voices, come-on, you gotta be kidding. The pronunciation is horrific, especially where I live in Montreal, which has predominently French sounding names. They are completely not understandable, and they are only moderately better around my home in the Ney York Adirondacks. I totally preferred the version that didn't try to include street names.
I paid a lot of money for this Garmin, but it is certainly no better in terms of technology than my Nuvi 750. I'm generally disapointed.

Good kit, but buy from somewhere reputable.

I should have known better, but this was advertised on Ebay at an unrealistically low price. I seccumbed, and then the toerag retailer never sent it.
So I can't really review something that I never received. I have since purchased the model below this on a trip to the USA (3760T) which is still a very good unit. It doesn't have the 3D buildings feature or the voice activiation, but for what I paid in the US, I'm extremely happy with it.
The thinness of the unit means it's much easier to keep in your pocket, and I like the brightness and resolution of the screen (excellent). It does tend to get quite hot when in use, but so far it's been performing well with no issues.

Garmin nuvi 3790T

I decided to buy the 3790T after my 760 was stolen. Price is a little steap, but once you just get that out of the way and pull the trigger, it's worth it. I believe that lifetime traffic is a good benni, but honestly Garmin....just let us update the maps quarterly for free; you would truely hold the heavyweight belt for being the top dog for that. I much prefer Garmin over Tom Tom, and the 3790T just takes that love even farther. Sexy design, voice activated commands, "all the features", and screen resolution make for a whole new experience from Garmin. I wish the battery life was longer SEEMS THAT EVERYONE SAYS THAT ABOUT NAVI SYSTEMS, I wonder when they will address that finally! All in all, I'm very satisfied, but I wish I could be on the design team for a model, consumers would get what they long for I guarentee lol. I give it 95 out of 100..... and that's head and shoulders above what I give Tom Tom. If anyone shys away from this model because of price, hang your head in shame now.

UPDATE: 10/7/2011

Still the best Navi I've ever used. I will be switching to my smartphone when this dies because... how can you beat free map updates? YOU CAN'T Go Droid! Garmin... get with the program. Map updates should be free. My Droid's free app. is kicking your @$$ lol. Still the best Navi out there though.

Don't Even Think About It

While I can certainly appreciate another person's opinion (review), but for me -- the purchase of my 3790T has been anything but pleasant. Its slim-trim look is something to marvel over, however wait until you have to deal with the 2 to 3 mile time gap which it takes for the unit to sync with a satellite for directions. I previously owned a Nuvi 750T -- this unit always synced within seconds after fire-up from the same location that I use with my 3790T. Next, the phone sync system is a good idea, but it's really worthless because of the inferior mic / speakers that are provided with the unit. The voice activated command is another nice thought -- but again, worthless because the mic is inferior... unless you like screaming at a small box that mirrors the shape of an Ifone. Oh, all the other little bells/whistles (traffic/eco-drive etc.)-- nice, but are they really worth the expensive price tag? I think not!
PS, should I also say that I'm currently working with the seller for a refund since it's hard to tell if the unit is simply a lemon, defective, or simply poorly designed. Please, save your $400+ and buy something that is reliable yet effective in guidiance.

Highly Recommended! Serves its purpose, and more! Very happy w/ purchase!

Wonderful GPS. As with all new electronics, it takes some time to learn the ins and outs of its function, but this GPS was fairly easy to pick up. Lots of cool features...some that I use, and some that I do not. The screen is beautiful. Extremely crisp and clear. The voice command is surprisingly useful. I do not ask it to reinvent the wheel, but it is effective when needed. I like the fact that voice command is prompted by speaking, and not having to hit a button like some other models. My only complaint is probably the bluetooth. It works well for all intensive purposes, but the speaker just isnt very loud. I'm not unreasonable though, so you can not expect much more out of a GPS speaker. It is probably as loud as it could be, given the application. My phone echoes quite often when I use it, but that is more than likely my fault as there are other cords and electronics in my vehicle which could be causing distortion. The ecoRoute function is interesting, but not completely useful. Others opinion on this could be completely different though. The junction view is really cool. Always pops at the right time. I can not comment on the traffic update function, as my city and surrounding areas do not support it.Read full review...

Highly satisfied!

After I spent some time surveying web comments and comparisons, the nuvi 3790T looked like *the* GPS navigator for us. We're no newbies to GPS's; we've had 6 or 8 of them ... handhelds ('cause we geocached for a few years) and a built-in in my '06 Honda Civic.

This little unit trumps them all. We bought it because the Class C motorhome we have on order has no GPS in it. We wanted to practice with it so I used the nuvi's suction cup and pasted it to the screen of the built-in Navi in my Honda ... and it sticks there like a dream. That alone is a big plus. I've had trouble getting other Garmins to stick to our windshield.

The Voice Command works well. We're getting used to each other. There are still times when I have to say "Costco" ... "Costco" (louder) ... COSTCO! (shouting). But in general, the voice recognition is great. Hands-free, eyes-free operation is a HUGE safety feature.

Our on-board NAVI from Honda, despite a recent $180 software update, is pathetic by comparison. That may partly be excused by rapid advances in technology, but bear in mind my initial 2K outlay. The look-ups on our AT&T telephones may have been better, but so far the nuvi's given me no reason to complain.

Besides, if there are new favorite destinations it's easy to record the lon-lat, tag it with an identifier (like "Liquor Store") and keep it under "Favorites".

The number of languages you can choose from is amazing. It's fun to try to find the Liquor Store in Japanese. ;-)

I guess I'd like a bigger screen and would prefer a built-in version in our new RV, but for the price the nuvi is fantastic.

Recommended!

Garmin nuvi 3790T

This is the best GPS I've come across. It is packed with features. The slimline design is unbelievable. An excellent value for the money. One thing though, if you purchase this unit do not download the map update unless you first talk to a tech at Garmin. I registered my unit right away and decided to download the latest free update before the offer expired. The map update caused a problem with the speech recognition feature and now I can't use that feature to search for a new address until Garmin finishes writing a software patch update. It will say "this feature is not available for the United States" They told me it should be available in a couple of weeks. The touch screen is unaffected.Read full review...

Great GPS for the price, feature and mounting features for a motorcycle/car

I purchased 3790T GPS because of its power to the base of the mount, terrain feature, thin profile, and lite weight. I used the GPS on my 09 Harley Davidson Ultra Glide motorcycle and it led me across county and back to areas I had pre-planed in the "trip planer". I could see the screen at all times and had no problems with glare on the glass screen, which had vivid colors. I mounted the GPS on my TAC face plate and set the GPS to show bikes current speed and posted, elevation and arrival time to the next location. The "Red Light Camera" notification is a great feature.Read full review...

Best GPS to date, including factory installed, that I have ever used.

So far, the 3790T is, by far, the best GPS I have had, and this includes Magellans, TomToms, and Toyota factory installed. The display in both regular and 3D is crisp and clean. Voice commands make this model much easier to use when driving and much quicker even with non-driving input. It is extremely slim and easy to carry for use with pedestrian mode. I prefer Garmins generally, although I had a bad experience with a 1690 model. Not sure I would pay full list price for any GPS, but for around $200, the 3790 is a great deal.Read full review...
