Good performance and features, not a great firewall feature set, DNS issue- discovered work around

I have own several wireless routers over the years, this was a recent upgrade from a TP-Link (which seemed to need rebooting every couple of days (won't buy TP-Link brands again. Netgear has been a solid product line I have used for years with low end switches. This Netgear is behind a Century DSL Link Router " ZyXEL PK5001Z " . I ran into a strange issue with DNS resolution, I normally set the DNS servers entry with the two DNS server addresses that the DSL router identifies, this then is used by DHCP (to issue IP addresses), I have always done this in the past and this is how you do it in large enterprise networks. What I found was that things have apperently changed with the newer equipment. I found that to get the network stable, I had to make sure that the DSL router was acting as the DNS server, then also set the Netgear to point at the router for its DNS, next set the Netgear IP address as the DNS provider for the DHCP network, immediately the network stabilized and has been up for a month now with out needing a reboot. My guess is that typical approach to DNS has been modified in the Firmware of newer products now to improve DNS auto switching to more dynamic DNS servers on the Internet to reduce service tickets.Read full review...

This one goes to 11.

I did alot of research before my purchase and settled on the WNDR3700, it had the highest rating out of the latest dual band routers at the time. Smallnetbuilder.com and the Netgear user forum where two places I used for research.

This router has 4 SSIDs and two band ranges and two GHz ranges, both G/B and A/N bands in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ranges. I bought it because I wanted my Wifi network in the 5 GHz range, I live in an apartment and have over 15 SSIDs in the 2.4 GHz range, very crowded. You can have two Guest SSIDs that can be set to have access only to the internet and not your network. I needed to still have G/B bands as my cellphones are not N band capable, and this is one of the few dual band simultaneous routers, others you have to chose one or the other, in other words this one goes to 11. Another thing about this router that separates it from others is that it is a N band router in the 5 GHz range, other routers tout their N band class but fail to mention its only on the 2.4 GHz range. Do make sure that your laptop or device is also capable or the N band 5 GHz range.

Another feature that brought me to this device is the USB storage server feature, you can connect a USB hard drive/flash drive to it for a type of NAS, or a printer. It also states that you can use an attached storage device to serve media to other devices, there is alot of controversy on the forums over its ability to do this. If you decide to get a USB drive for this purpose DEFINITELY go on Netgears website and look at the APPROVED devices. I went with a WD 1TB Elements drive and its working great, I can even access my files remotely from the net.

This router is also a Gigabit LAN, I went with Cat7 cable from my Comcast modem to the router and then to a D-Link Gigabit switch, after that I went to Cat6 cable. I was able to get Sanwa and other high end cat cables from Etailers at about 1/5 the cost of local shops selling brands like Belkin.

I have Comcasts Docis 3.0 service at 25/8, I have seen 40 down wired, normally 30 down wired. Before the new network I was getting about 15 down on Wifi, now I regularly get 28-30. And so far no disconnects, I was getting about one disconnect a day on my old router.

I bought this router because my laptop is N band and I was getting disconnects via wifi, and it was time to upgrade to gigabit.

High Performance and features for a good price...Get DD-WRT on it STAT.

I've owned about 10 Wireless routers over the years, mostly Linksys models but a couple of Netgears. The linksys models always eventually die - both the Netgear devices I have still work and have generally better range than comparable Linksys models. My newest netgear was G only so it was time to upgrade. I selected this router specifically because of it's high-end specs AND the fact that it's supported by the DD-WRT project(google it). I've had the WNDR3700 for a few weeks and am highly impressed. You can look up the specs elsewhere so I won't bother going over them. The USB storage and ability to access it from inside or OUTSIDE your LAN are nice. The gigabit ports and extensive array of indicator LED's are also a plus. The one negative I have for this model seems to be a common missing feature on all the Netgear routers I've had. The port-forwarding feature only allows you to forward to the same internal port that you come in to from the outside. In other words, you can't tell it to forward stuff coming in from the internet on one port to an internal IP via another port. This can usually be fixed by configuration at the client PC, but with Linksys equipment the option is available. That alone would have stopped me from buying this router - luckily, installing DD-WRT on this router adds that feature along with TONS more...including the ability to share printers via the USB connection instead of just external storage.Read full review...

Darned Good Router

I have the say that this router doesn't really disappoint. Great throughput, great wireless range, great configuration features, and apparent reliability (one month now). This router replaced an Airport Extreme Gigabit - a solid, reliable router. But the configuration of the Airport was Extreme-ly frustrating and confusing. I've also tried the wrt610n (version 1 & 2)and they just don't match the features and wireless range of the WNDR3700.

No router is perfect and the hype may do a dis-service to the overall value of this router. I haven't tried the USB (which was basically non-functional on the Airport Extreme if you weren't running a Mac) and I also haven't tried out the Guest Network functions but what I have used, MAC filtering, dual band networks and static routing w/RIP all work as expected.

Well worth the price, which by the way, is less than the WRT610n.

Oldie but a goodie

This series of router seems to be easier to pick up on the used side of things than other routers with a gigabit switch built in. I needed this to function as a wired gigabit router and it does the job quite well. It works out even better in my case not having any external antennas (V1 only) since I wasn't utilizing the wifi. Other versions of this router have external antennas if that is needed. The wifi works fine even though I turned it off after testing it.

I have an older netgear router (10/100 switch built in) that functioned in this capacity and played well with my main TPLINK AC1750 router, so after trying a Belkin ac1600 with a gigabit switch that did not play well with my main router, I looked for a netgear that would fit the bill since they were going for much more reasonable prices than TPLINK. This router seems to also be supported quite well by custom firmwares although I had issues using LEDE to connect with my Verizon FIOS ISP, ended up reverting back to factory firmware, using the handy dandy recovery TFTP mode, and it works like a charm (should have just used it as I received it, but I'll never learn). I'm assuming the other versions are of similar high quality.

Anyway, I highly recommend this router.

Great router for the refurbished price....

I have been going through multiple routers to find what I want -- and this is as good as it is going to get.. I was looking for:

-Long range to cover my house and driveway

This router failed to meet these standards BUT so has most I have found. I had an old D-Link G router that did a better job (the N's are suppose to have better range, too) but all N's I have tried fail to live up to the promise.

-NAS storage

This router has a USB port that turns a portable hard drive into a network storage device, works great!

-Dual Band, at same time

This works great on this device -- I can use the 5ghz on my iPad and laptop while all nocompatible devices get by on the 2.4ghz. I can also create a guest account for friends and family, so that is good too!

For $65 this is the best bang for the buck router you can get.

Only reason I gave 4 stars is because it is a refurbished product with only 30 days warranty so you are taking a risk. So far so good, no crashes yet (crosses fingers). For those that are curious the refurbished router I got was version 1. Not sure if they're all version 1 or if it was random. Improved my wireless range quite a bit, avg 1-2 more full bars. Lots of features, QoS options, even has a repeater mode otpion, etc. The only thing I hate was that when you setup the MAC filter option you can only enter a MAC address one at a time, was quite tedious. FYI I'm using the Netgear firmware that came with the router, haven't tried it with DD-WRT yet. Did not see any reason to, the stock one met all my needs and is performing flawlessly so far.Read full review...

Cheap nice Router and media server for all ur needs

The WNDR3700 from netgear from release have many issues but i wanna give a try and buy this one refunished item. It was like new when it come in the boxs with plastic in the shiny side. I just plug it and it was working fast but u need to wait when u plug the power button just like 10 seconds for it to start working. It work faster than my last router it run 2 bands but at the moment i can't use the 5.0 band but it say it have a mode for fast video stream and media but u need to have a compatible wifi to use that band the other band the 2.6 n-g can be used and up to 150g all most all is compatible with it . This router also can be used to stream media from a device conected to the router ex: external hard disc, usb storage ect, let say u are using a usb wih fre space and u go movies and pics or music u conect it and u are using a ps3 and u wana see a movie just browser it in ur ps3 and stream from ur router the usb data. For the price is good and work fine with games i used Battlefiel 3 and no lag also the signal is strong, i have it in the in the corner of the house and i play ps3 online from the other side of my house.Read full review...

Great home router.

Good wireless router, great performance on both 2.4/5ghz bands at once. Compatible with DD-WRT, so that is most certainly a plus. Stock firmware is passable, has all the options the average user could want. Port forwarding/ port triggering isn't confusing like a lot of stock firmware from many manufacturers. The fact Netgear's routers check for updates when you connect to your ISP is VERY handy. My experience with this router, the remanufactured model, is that it tended to lose connectivity on very large file transfers both on intranet and the internet. That issue seemed to be resolved by switching to DD-WRT shortly after receiving it. So there may have been some unseen issue with the stock firmware when it was loaded. Admittedly, port forwarding for static IP is easier on the stock, but the rich features of DD-WRT and many other abilities that it has, trumps the port forwarding issue easily. The only real negatives are the lights are bright (Not an issue for me, but it may be for some) and the difficulty of adding external antenna without hardware modification. Aside from that, it is hard to beat for the money.Read full review...

You would be hard-pressed to find a comparable Consumer product!

Over the last two years I have upgraded my home network to full Gigabit, and installed a FREENAS 8.x storage network (running on Dell HW) so everyone in the house has high-speed network access, lots of storage, and low latency when they and their friends are all playing WOW.

This router is the CORE to this network, and has provided extremely stable dependability. It is quiet, secure, and the wireless LAN has been solid, stable, and provides excellent throughput for Skype, YouTube, and surfing.

(2022 edit) Well, the kids have grown. I've since upgraded my home network, and recently put this to good use for them going off to college. #1 is stability. Mom & Dad can't be troubleshooting their dorm or apartment network problems, so reliability is key. This does it. DD-WRT was critical to extending the life and performance. Inexpensive, reliable, and no glitches.
