No Doubt His Greatest Contribution

From the first song to the last, Marvin’s beautiful gift to the world was composed and recorded during 1970-’71, while in Detroit and West Hollywood, CA. This album invites the listener to stop, look and listen to what’s going on in our world. From the Vietnam War, to Civil Rights, to children being killed by the military, and widespread poverty, is discussed in a poetic, yet raw musical conversation. I assimilate this CD to a conversation, because there are nine songs on the CD, which play continuously, one after another, with no break in the music.

During trying times we are all consumed by the darkness of the world, and have no way to express our true feelings and pain. I’m sure Marvin felt the same way, yet he was fortunate enough to get some disclosure thru his music. There are very few albums that you can just put it on and let it play. This is definitely one of those rare albums. I love every song. I also love the concept of the next song flowing directly after the previous one, until the end. Talk about pure genius and absolute perfection! Finally in 2001, Motown did release a two-disc deluxe edition of “What’s Going On”, which includes the original Detroit album mix, before it was re-mixed in Los Angeles. Go buy it!

Motown Bass Players

I've always loved the 60's - 70's Motown style, as a fan and a musician. This recording is mentioned often as the best of Motown. I purchased the CD based on a Bass Player magazine review of the albums bass players, James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt playing on this album. Iit brought me back to a different time. It replaced an LP gone long ago and forgotten. At 38 minutes (the only down side) the first 5 tracks are pure Jamerson, wonderful and tasteful. The last 4 tracks are Babbitt, who has his own unique Motown groove. An excellent mining source for bassplayers who want to revisit, or learn their roots in this wonderful genre.Read full review...

Bootleg mess

This was a CD made of snippets of a few songs from the original authentic “What’s Going On” album. Poor quality and not authentic.

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye

I am a true blue Motown fan and owm many Marvin Gaye CD's. This one protrays a very mellow side of Marvin's music and contains a few classic songs. I had this on LP and I am very pleased with this addition to my collection.Read full review...
