Gripping read
This book was an eye opener. I learned a huge amount about the Jewish community in Berlin before the war; how much courage, wits, and luck were necessary to survive; how many non-Jews were involved in saving this one person, Maria Simon; and life in Berlin during the war generally. Given what the author suffered, her story could have been terribly depressing; but she had such energy and optimism, and such success against the odds, that it is, instead, inspiring.Read full review...
