Authenically, True Grit

This remake of the original 1969 True Grit, with John Wayne, is more Authentic in every way. Jeff Bridges shines as Rooster Cogburn. He creates a very believable character. I just can't say enough about Jeff Bridges acting in this movie and in my opinion, makes this movie worth watching. The cinematography is true to the time and serves to place you squarely in 1880's Oklahoma. I never truly liked the 1969 movie however, this 2010 remake, makes this movie a favorite in my collection. I highly recommend it! Read full review...

exceptionally well done movie. See it with anyone who appreciates a good movie, a good westerm or both

As almost everybody knows, this is a remake of the classic original. The movie is very realistic and true to its proported time, more so than the original as much which is shown here would either not have been filmed at the time of the original or have been allowed in theatres of the time.

Jeff Bridges in the title role as Cogburn (a role originally made famous by the late John Wayne) turns in a stellar performance as a broken down usually half drunk one eyed US Marshall ; and the supporting cast equally fills in their respective parts. Unfortunately less credit than is deserved is paid to the young actress who plays the main female role of Mattie Ross.

Get both versions, watch'em both, and sit back and enjoy the bullets fly.

I very much enjoyed this film and I will watch it more than once.

I purchased this DVD because of the movie title and the cast, particularly the actor in the lead role. I saw and remember the original version of the movie starring John Wayne. I also admire the Coen brothers and, although I don't always enjoy their films, I respect their ability to tell a story.

I thought this story was rendered very well and scripted very close to the original movie. The imagery and the character development are excellent.

I would definitely recommend this film to others. It's very much worth the time.

Best Version of the book True Grit and well worth watching!!

I read the Book after the John Wayne version, and was really disappointed in the JW's movie. The Book is phenomenal and it was only by chance I saw Jeff Bridges version on TV ! WOW!! What a difference, the characters were true to the book, the scenes were very well presented and it brought the book to life. Had to have this movie for my collection!! Read full review...

I really like this version.

I really like this version of True Grit. However, I still prefer the earlier John Wayne version of the film. But, I am told that this Jeff Bridges version is more authentic to the book. So I do recommend this version of True Grit to others. Read full review...

An Excellent Retelling of a Classic Story

Jeff Bridges shines in this 2010 version of the 1969 John Wayne movie that won him a long deserved Academy Award. Jeff plays Rooster Cogburn as a much more serious U. S. Marshall with a subtle sense of humor. With 2010 morals in place, we learn that Rooster has had 2 wives and why their relationships never worked out. We could have never been told that in 1969.

But the real star of True Grit 2010 is the unknown child star Hailee Steinfeld, who portrays the Kim Darby role, Mattie Ross, who in this movie practically drafts Rooster to look for her daddy's killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Rooster is much more of an unwilling hunter in this movie, and he does everything he can to keep from becoming the chaperone for Mattie.

Matt Damon plays La Boeuf, the Glen Campbell role of a Texas ranger, who is also looking for Chaney for an earlier murder in Texas. The competition between La Boeuf and Cogburn is much more evident in this movie than in the first. In the first movie, we were treated to Glen Campbell as a singer.

There is a lot of dialog in this movie, and I did not want to miss any of it as much of it was subtly humorous. It was a good time to turn on the subtitles. I highly recommend that.

There are 3 special features to this dvd. (1) the first one shows Hailee Steinfeld, who explains how she was chosen for the coveted role of Mattie Ross (2) the costume designer, Mary Zophres, discusses all the research that she made to getting the costumes right and why she picked what she did and (3) the set designer shows us how Grainger, Texas, was chosen to portray Fort Smith, Arkansas and all of the changes that were made to make it look authentic 1870-1880s.

The Coen brothers brilliantly directed all of this movie, and it shows. Thus, this movie is a reworking of what was previously a hit but now everything looks brand new and has a different flavor. They are both hits in my book.

A good update of an old classic

Bought for my daughter-in-law. I finally got to view and it was better than the original. Don't care too much for John Wayne

The same but different

It was not identical to the John Wayne version but followed the same story line while offering up Jeff Bridge's great talent to provide an unique film. The two films should not be compared side by side but rather stand alone as masterpieces when it comes to western movies. Both are unforgettable movies which I'll return to time and again. It's sad that very few westerns, especially quality ones, are being produced now days. True Grit demonstrates that they can continue to offer top notch entertainment.Read full review...

5 star Coen western

I avoided this because it was a remake. Noone should remake a John Wayne classic. Noone except the Coen brothers, who should just please do whatever movie they most feel like making. I am very impressed with the Coen's work.
This is much the same story we all remember, but it looks better and has better dialogue. Matt Damon is better than Glen Campbell was and Barry Pepper does great in the Duvall role. Wayne was better though I give Bridges lots of credit for even having the guts to take the role-he did fine. Really the new Mattie Ross, Hailee Steinfeld, made all the difference. She carried a lot of water, and the film is better for this change in focus. Josh Brolin had fun and I liked him here. A 5 star Coen film. Hopefully they make many more films!

Better Rooster, Mattie, LaBoeuf ... better Western altogether. Worth it.

Although considered blasphemy, the depiction of Rooster Cogburn by Jeff Bridges is much better than John Wayne's. Wayne is a legend, and many consider him to be the ultimate American/Cowboy/Patriot ... but he was never the ultimate actor. Bridges and Damon strike the upper limit of acting chemistry while Hailee Steinfeld delivers a flawless depiction of the character Mattie Ross ... with a lot more realism and sand! The unexpected character of Forester (The Bear Man) just adds to the mix; everyone seems to love him. This movie portrays characters which are very human, sometimes even humorous ... the language is accurate for the period, too, without being ponderous. This is a truly great western movie that you will find yourself replaying in segments to relive your favorite parts. YouTube will give you a good taste, if you want to see what I mean. Buy it.Read full review...
