If read as the fiction it is, this was quite a story and well written.

My book club read this book soon after we saw the movie "Midnight in Paris". We enjoyed the book and had a lively discussion. It has inspired me to read some Hemingway that I had not read and re-read some others from my college days. I'm not sure about the veracity of some of the events in the book, but McLain captures accurately the fact that this complex and troubled man actually loved Hadley as well as Pauline. Immediately and years later he wrote that the destruction of the marriage was a tragedy for which he always and rightly blamed himself. I'd like to see books by McLain about his subsequent marriages.Read full review...

Great book -- highly recommend!

This book is a novelized version of Hemingway's life as he starts his writing career, and first wife; the facts seem to be very accurate, as I checked up on a few things. Especially fascinated by the wife's background and how constrained her choices were in her life when she met Hemingway; also surprised that he actually could love a woman such as her. Fascinated by his relationship with Gertrude Stein, and the great influence she had on his writing style -- and why they had their falling out. Great book -- one of the best I have read this year. I read it for a book club I belong to and there was not one negative rating, which is unusual for our group.Read full review...

Ernest Hemmingway became what he was because of his first wife. The Paris W

This book about Ernest Hemingway's first wife is fiction but it is based on true facts of his first marriage to Hadley. The book takes the reader to early Paris days and makes feel like you are actually there. The story is told thru the eyes of Hadley. I could not put it down till I finished it. I hope to read more books by Paula McLain, she really captured history and made you more knowledgeable of Ernest Hemmingway and the man he was. Also how because of this wife he became such a great writer. This novel made me more aware of life in Paris and how life was in the 1920s.Read full review...

Excellent read!

This is an excellent read! About Hemingway and his first wife during thier time living in Paris. Lots of recognizable literary names were there during that time. Historical fiction....I'm certainly not a critic; just an avid reader, and I could not put this book down! I actually bought another copy for a friend who loves Paris for her birthday.Read full review...

Wonderful book about Hemingway in France...We go in May!

Our Son is in The US Mission to France from the State Department. We go visit him, his wife and our two grandchildren May 1.
Knowing little about neighborhoods and my wife having worked at Sun Valley while Mr Hemingway was there, in the 60's this was an intriguing book.

It came promptly, beautiful conditition and securely wrapped.

5+ all the way around!

A good read with Paris included.

I bought this book, then realized I had already read it earlier and enjoyed it. I really enjoy books with a setting in Paris, and this one didn't disappoint, other than buying it twice.

a good read

Interesting. This book was written from Hemingway's first wife's perspective. Gathering from this book that The Sun Also Rises is written from Hemingway's perspective, I have another book to read.

A Good Book Club selection

The book was our book club selection for the month. The book is a novel about Ernest Hemmingway's first wife. It is a very good read. It is plausible and seems like non-fiction at times.
