The Chicago Manual of Style

Although qualifying among the most authoritative works for those who participate in the writing, editing and publishing trades, some aspects of these fields, such as templates, alternative formatting and pre-press detailing would have made this Style Manual much more comprehensive.

These missing or minimally referenced areas notwithstanding, the book excels in those presentations, rules and protocols that are included. Serious writers, publishers...and yes, printers, should have this Manual among their reference works, and should update it when revisions become available.

The Chicago Manual of Style is definitely recommended for professionals, but also for students and researchers who are interested in the "rules of the trade." Each new edition can be trusted to bring forth new, current and effective style-changes and updates to processes that are evolving and improving over time. An absolute must have

One of my seminary professors recommended this book to help with writting mid term essays. I wish I would have known about this book sooner .

Writers need to be consistent in handling style issues; this guides you.

For a writer, this is as essential a tool as a dictionary or thesaurus. It tells you how best to handle style issues in a consistent manner. Sure, there are other such manuals, but I believe this is the best. While they update regularly, the changes are not significant enough that you need the latest edition.
