To Boldly Go

So William Shatner has produced and directed a film about himself. Seems a bit self-centered, perhaps? Well, not so much actually. A nicely done series of intimate talks with all of the one-time star-ship captains to date which brings a human warmth to the men (and only woman) who worked so hard to make it all happen. This is really well done, giving each captain a chance to show us the real person, discussing how the character changed their lives. Each and every one a complex, well-spoken, interesting individual with whom I was privileged to meet on their terms. This film also talks much of the Star Trek fandom, of whom Mr. Shatner was a bit leery, until he came to realize the existence of, and the power of, the Star Trek Effect on those of us such as myself. Just the fact that it has lasted so long, growing every year, makes it a phenomenon unlike any other. I am also a Star Wars fan. I enjoy well written science fiction in any genre. This film adds to all of that, plus with Mr. Shatner's wit and humor thrown in for good measure. So by all means, please indulge and enjoy.Read full review...

"The Captains", an insightful look at "The Actors"

If you've ever seen an episode of William Shatner's cable show "Shatner's Raw Nerve" then you'll have an idea of what this DVD is like. It's a deep look at the actors and their lives during the years they worked on their respective "Star Trek" series.

This is not a "Trekkie" view of their characters, it is a human view of the real people who happen to be actors. I enjoyed it because despite our notions of how glamorous the entertainment world looks, it tells us how hard and demanding that acting can be on their lives. It shows them as real people.

I gave this only 4 stars because the segments with Avery Brooks tended to drag, as Brooks is a little "out there". Also, I was disappointed that Leonard Nimoy was not included, because, as Trekkers know, he was the captain of the Enterprise in "Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan". So I think it would have been right to include him.

Enjoy!

Interesting

Very interesting. Waffles on a bit in the end but apart from that, I'd recommend it fit Trekkies.

A feast for Trek fans. Captain Kirk(look it's Spock!) in his element.insights,stories,fans.....If you wanted to find out what the captains are/have been up to,Mr Shatner travels the world to ask those questions many have wanted answered.Done in only a style that the "Shat" could pull off, some may say its all about him but I say so what, its his project!Read full review...
