Taciturn, but invaluable.
This text is one of the most illustrative of all Latin texts regarding ancient Europe. The peremptory dismissal by Tacitus of the customs and practices of the Germanic Tribes, coupled with his spartan style make it an easy read, but sadly short on detail. Of course, his overlay of Roman efficiency and citizenship would color his descriptions of the loosely organized, often debauched Germanic life, but I suppose his willingness to include the things he did means he saw substance in them for some reason. At any rate, if one is a student of Anglo-Saxon culture, or even the early roots of Nordic culture, one must read this book. It is as fundamental to early European history as Gibbon is to Roman History.Read full review...
