Beethoven's 9 Symphonies conducted by Herbert Von Karajan - recorded in 1963

This was a very inexpensive collection of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies conducted by Herbert Von Karajan in 1963. It is not in stereo, so the sound is not up to modern technology conditions, but is a good recording of how Karajan conducted Beethoven's symphonies when he was younger. I found the pace to be very fast, and some of the renditions, particularly of the fifth, seventh, eighth, and parts of the ninth, to have a more decidedly "germanic" feel to them. Particulary compared to modern recordings, these sound more traditional, and perhaps closer to the canonical Beethoven.. There is always controversy on just how fast Beethoven wanted some of his pieces played ,but here Von Karajan has very much decided that the fastest pace is the best interpretation. A nice window on the past. Read full review...

One of the best recordings of Beethoven's symphonies

This is one of the most well-reviewed recordings of Beethoven's symphonies and it lives up to its reputation. Compared to Karajan's other excellent recordings from the '70s and '80s, it's a little bit more raw and spontaneous sounding, with a rounder, brassier sound that isn't dated even though it was recorded in the early '60s. Reviewers seems to grudgingly rate this '60s set high because of their distaste for Karajan and his persona -- and it's actually even better than often reviewed. The 5th and 7th beat Carlos Kleiber's and the 9th blows away Bernstein and Furtwangler.

Von Karajan Rocks Beethoven!

These are great older recordings (1963) that still sound impressive. I went looking for a highly-thought-of set of these symphonies, read reviews, and found that quite a few people think these are among the best versions. I would highly recommend these to anyone wanting a good solid set of these timeless works.Read full review...

Beethoven Symphonies Cornerstone

Excellent performances of these familiar works. Sound is a little dull, especially compared to todays standards, but the ear quickly adjusts to the early 60's sound. One reviewer mentioned these are not stereo but I think they are stereo. A staple in the DG catalogue for years, this set is extremely valuable in gaining insight on what the composer wanted us to experience thru his tireless efforts of great creativity, A truly must have for the avid Beethoven symphonies enthusiast!Read full review...

Item's physical quality is excellent and a good recording.

This recording is the Karajan's best interpretation of Beethoven's Symphonies although he did the same series of recording later.
