Becoming the Monster

This is the third of Scott Westerfeld's Uglies trilogy. Tally, our 16 year old protagonist, has become what she hated and feared in both Uglies and Pretties-she's part of Special Circumstances. This appeals to her for a number of reasons: she lives in the wild, has super physical powers, a close bunch of friends (the Crims she joined in Pretties) and she can operate outside the law, which she now helps to enforce. Along with Shay, the girl that shares her birthday (and is now the Crims' leader), they "hunt" for those that are recruiting for the "New Smoke."

It was strange to hear Tally taking orders from Shay; her attitude was rather subserviant, so the Specials operation affected her mentally as well as physically, but she begins to develop and finally overcomes the "Specials program" without medication. Most of the book revolves around Shay and Tally (who get separated)following a group of runaways to the New Smoke. They're intention is to turn them in. Instead, the two inadvertantly start a war in a world that hasn't known one for quite some time.

The group Tally follows includes her boyfriend from Pretties, Zane. She finds herself disgusted by him. Though he's still pretty, he's weak (especially from the pill he took in Pretties).

She also bumps into David, her boyfriend from Uglies. All of this dregs up her memories and though she still has razor-sharp teeth and ceramic bones, she starts to change.

I like the series because I find Westerfeld's take on a possible future (and how we got there) interesting. The technology and language used throughout create a believable world, which is a bit spooky. This is from the Young Adult genre, which I am not, a young adult that is. Even those outside their teens should find something to enjoy in Westerfeld's series.

Specials: last book in the trilogy by Scott Westerfeld

I finally received the third and final book from the Uglies, Pretties, and Specials trilogy written by the brilliant Scott Westerfeld.
I LOVED this trilogy so much that I have since gone back and reread them all! I enjoyed the characters that Westerfeld introduces in his books.
Tally is Westerfeld's main character in the trilogy. It is amazing to watch her transformation as she contemplates good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, along with turning "16". In Tally's world, 16 is a very, very special age!
Specials is a great book to end Westerfeld's trilogy. I would recommend anyone that likes young adult fiction purchase these wonderful books! I purchased Specials because I couldn't put the first two books down!

Interesting

This is the third book to the uglies series. It wrappes it all up. But I was dissapointed by it. I loved the first one so much but the last two felt like the plot was the same. And the ending was not complete to me. It just ended i thought. I wanted more. More explanation of it. More talking. Basically i felt it was unresolved.Read full review...

specials was the slowest of the four but still worth it

This set is actually four books. It isn't a trilogy as stated by others. I thought that specials was the only bad book of the entire set but if you don't want to feel lost when you read extras you should read this one. The set in itself was outstanding and I would recommend it to anyone young or old.Read full review...

The Specials

I bought this book to finish off the series. They will all be put into my classroom for the students to read. I like to know what they are reading. All three books made you think.

Unexpected Twist

If you have read the book, you know what I am talking about. If not, what are you waiting for. This book does a great job of wrapping up the great Uglies Trilogy! You have to read this series.
