Sony clie PEG-T415 (Silver)

Its a great, cheap product for reading ebooks. No need to buy the kindle. I bought it used, put a new battery in and works great!

Alternative Ebook Reader

Originally released in 2001 and you can find examples still going strong - how many of today's Kindles will still be usable in 10 year's time?

This is an earlier model Clie. It's very similar to the SL10 which followed it, except that this has an aluminum body, not plastic, and a rechargeable battery (replaceable, if you can find one), rather than AAAs. It feels solid and well-built - nice to hold.

As the other reviews say, it makes an excellent, pocketable ebook reader. There are several free ebook reader programs available for the operating system, Palm OS 4. "Ereader" (formerly 'Peanut Reader') is the one I favour. Another free piece of (desktop/laptop) software, "Calibre", will convert almost any kind of non-DRM ebook to the "Ereader" format. There's also freeware called 'CardTXT' available which will read txt files, like those on gutenberg.org; CardTXT is more of a text editor than a proper ebook reader but it has a full-screen function, and clear fonts.

Contemporary reviews tended to criticise the Clie's screen. It is quite reflective so it tends to work best in very bright light or, with its backlight on, in the dark. The backlight is a green glow, like Indiglo watches have - you'll maybe love it or hate it. The screen is way smaller than those of current ebook readers, of course; I use a bold font, otherwise it would be a strain to read.

You'll need to find an old, non-PRO Memory Stick if you want to use the Memory Stick slot. These are very rare, and will probably cost you as much as or more than the Clie itself on eBay.
