Old school small sensor low rez by today standards

So it's 2018 full frame dslrs are affordable.i have a Pentax k1 that I love and a handful of great primes and shoot mf film too
Sometimes it's just fun to grab a cheap old digicam from years gone by and put in program mode and just point and shoot whatever grabs attention and print out a bunch of 4x6.this old antique of a camera is also very capable of large prints too if you want, not poster size lol but crisp 11x14 maybe a 16x20 depending on subject and no huge raw files to deal withRead full review...

Sony Mavica MVC CD500

I like the Sony Mavica cameras because of their quality and ease of use.

The MVC CD500 is a 5 megapixel camera and the top of the Mavica line of CD cameras. It has all the features you'll need for taking a wide variety of photographs. The macro mode is perfect to get close to small nature shots and the 12X zoom(3X optical, 4X Smart zoom) will bring in those things you can't get close to. It has a movie mode and microphone to capture live action video. At 5 megapixels, it's all the camera you'll need for printing pictures up to and including 8 X 10's. The only feature you'll miss from the CD400 is there is no black and white mode with the CD500. All in all, the CD500 is a great camera to have for those "Kodak" moments.Read full review...

Unusual camera with some great features

This camera, one of the latest in the Mavica line intrigued me. Not only for its uniqueness, but for its quality as well. Zeiss lenses are among the best, and the fact this camera possess it adds to its photographing quality. Also the use of its laser focusing system, places it in the same family as the Sony Cybershot DSC F717 and F828. Saving the images to the mini CD-R is something that some camera enthusiasts will find interesting. Though now dated with the flash memory options, its still a technology that for its time worked out well.

Overall, a good camera and good collectors item for those into the Mavica genre.

mavica by sony. everything you would mavica and more.

This camera is an excellent first digital for someone. you have the point and shoot type features to help the beginner; or, you can have the complexity of setting all the setting as well to take you beyond the beginner. The one thing that I don"t like is lack of depth of field. you have to be fairly close to your subject to have a truely outstanding picture.

I bought this one because the seller made it sound so wonderful. It is for what it"s intent is but not for a novice who wants more.
Thank you
Dale

Great pictures, Lots of Features, Easy or Go Pro!

The Sony Mavica MVC CD500 is an excellent camera. I bought mine new in 2003 ... bought it because it has a nice, big lens ... not a pin-hole lens like most pocket cameras have. I am a graphic artist and darkroom technician and I knew that I wanted a camera that would take a sharp picture. I also liked the idea of all pictures being permanently saved onto a CD as you make your shots (a CD that your PC can open for you)... no "memory sticks" to deal with. I was impressed with all of the program overides that give you the ability to take photos with a fixed F-Stop or a fixed shutter speed or the option to go completely manual with your choice of shutter speed and F-stop. Focus, too has several options for you to choose.

BUT ... when I got it home and started using it, I found that it's easy to take a great picture using it as just a Point & Shoot camera. It's easy to use if all you want is a great snap-shot photo. The other bells and whistles are there when you want to get serious ... compensate for backlighted subject, compensate for various artificial lighting, go into Portrait Mode for a great wedding shot or Snow Mode or Beach Mode to keep the background of your photo from looking burned-out ... but you don't need to worry about them.

It has a hot shoe for the addition of an external flash. It has a threaded tripod mounting point. The battery can run the camera for about two hours. The camera turns itself off after three minutes of non-use to save battery power. You can plug in the charger while you use the camera to give yourself unlimited studio time with your camera "on".

The only negatives about this camera are the lack of a viewfinder (you have to compose the picture as you look at the little LCD screen) and the zoom of only 3X. You can go to 10X in some photo modes ... but anything over 3X is a digital zoom. It is a large, bulky camera by today's standards, but I like the heft of it. This is a top quality piece of work.

I own Adobe Photoshop CS3 and I am constantly impressed with the photos that this camera takes. Great detail in both highlight and shadow areas. Shoot as Tiff or Jpeg ... great photos. I have owned my Mavica since 2003 ... and I have taken over 9100 pictures (!) with never a glitch or a breakdown. Great camera!

I miss my Sony Mavica MVC CD500

Here I am reading all these good things about this camera...and mine is in the shop for it's second trip in a month. I have been having problems lately. Now, first I want to mention that I have had this camera for over three years now and love sooo many things about it. I had purchased the extended warranty when I purchased the camera, so the repairs are costing me nothing. I have taken so many wonderful shots with this amazing camera...professional and personal. The problems I have been experiencing with it have been very troublesome though. This camera saves the photos on mini cd's that can be taken and put directly into your computer cd-rom and viewed immediately. As of lately, I have been having many, many disc errors causing me to NOT be able to view my photos after taking them. Sometimes the disc error shows up on the camera LCD screen and other times I don't know there is even a problem until I get ready to view my photos on the computer. What a bummer to take all these wonderful pics and not be able to even see them afterward! The store I purchased the camera from sent it in to Sony the first trip around and it came back supposedly fixed with a new 160.00 part...and when I got it home and inserted a new mini cd...turned on the camera and what is the first thing I see on my LCD screen...yep, disc error before ever taking a shot. The camera was actually in worse condition when I got it back from the repair! I was so disappointed. I love this camera and I sure hope it comes back "good as new" this time. If I continue to have problems with it I will update my review to warn others of this problem. Please don't let this stop you from purchasing this wonderful camera. You will be so happy with the advantages of it. I do advise buying the extended warranty though. Mine has already paid for itself.
October 12th, 2006- Now I want to update everyone on what is happening with my camera repair or non-repair I should say. I bought this camera from Best Buy for $699.99. Luckily, I also paid the $99.99 for the service contract. My camera is in for it's 4th repair. I have not had my camera since August 21st and today is October 12th. Best Buy is acting like I should not be upset in any way that I have not had my camera for this long. I have a grandson that is 17 mos. old. I have missed out on two months of his young life in my memories. I am a person that has always loved taking and having pictures of family. This means more to me than I can explain. I do realize that I can use disposable cameras or other options. My point is that I should NOT have to. I paid $700 for a camera because I wanted good pictures and they mean so much to me. I am very upset that they cannot seem to fix this camera. I really love this camera and would prefer to have it back, but if they can't fix it I would like to have it replaced. I think the service contract that Best Buy stores sell are terrible. When I buy something from other stores, such as Sears, I buy the service contract and if anything goes wrong I do not ever go 2 months without my product. They have handed me new products right on the spot at Sears. That is the way it should be. I buy good products & deserve better service! I will never purchase anything from Best Buy again. I called Best Buys corporate office to discuss this. I was upset, but very polite. I was put on hold by a man named John for over 20 minutes. He told me he couldn't do anything for me. I would have to let them try the repair again.

Great camera- image quality & speed

I have to emphasize that this is a great camera that has great image quality. I have used many cameras and sony is well known for purple fringing (828 & HR series).

CD500 has very good WB, stabilization, almost no color issues. The later sony products are somehow crippled with fringing and WB issues. I know of a model that consistently fail to convert in flourescent lamp even in manual overide.

CD500 has its flaws too like zoom issue but there is always stitching software and 5MP allows a good crop!

Video at the lower resolution is not good but great at higher resolution. The limitation is CD storage. Did I mention storage is cheap cheap cheap and rewritable & storable!

Multiple burst is fine too as there is a memory buffer. No problem.

Finalising of CD takes some time but you can always take out the CD and transfer it on the PC without finalising it!

Try shooting in the night, its great! However, if you were to shoot dim indoors, you need to use Program mode or so just do not put it in auto mode as it actomatically bumps up the ISO setting and noise is prominent. Image stabilizer offers great help but if u can afford a monopod, would be even better - only in challenging lighting situations.

Ergonomics of the camera, beware that macro button, you can accidentally hit it easily, still, it overides it accordingly and does not affect pic quality!

If you have to buy a Sony product, I would recommend this camera model and not anything else. If you want better, try DSLR but loose the joy of capturing a real moment with video - well, we all carry a phone with video function these days, may be that can help!

Good camera, CD500! My second camera, got it for my brother!

Sony Mavica CD 500

The sony Mavica CD 500 is an excellent camera. This camera is very easy to learn! What makes the Mavica so great is the ease of picture downloads, you can either interface the camera direct to your P.C., or simply take the CD out of the camera and put it in your cd drive. The camera takes very clear pictures and is very easy to handle! The only drawback to the camera is the size and weight, the quality of the camera overcomes this objection very easily though. All in all I highly recommend this camera!Read full review...

Good Product

What I love about my camera?
Takes great pictures. I use the Zoom in and zoom out features a lot, and this camera handles it well.

What I dislike about my camera?
Being a novice photographer, it took me a while to learn all about my camera. The manual was not as simple, and required long reading. I simply did not have the time to sit and read through pages of manual.

In summary, if you're not as lazy as I am about reading the manual and tinkering with it, this is a good camera for you.

Sony Mavica CD500

The CD500 I purchased is a 2003 model. It has a excellent lens that delivers great photos under the right conditions. This model has a full range of adjustments that require a good knowledge of photographic settings. If you use an add on ttl flash it will reach out to about 40 ft. The mini CD's are nice but if you mess one up you can't just erase it and start over like a memory stick. Overall a good camera but would have liked a memory stick option like some of the older FD models.Read full review...
