A Must For Retaining Memories
This device plays mini-DV digital tapes. These small tapes are the last vintage of tapes for home camcorders before SD cards became the normal recording medium. These tapes are digital standard definition (SD) quality. The compression ratio is better than DVD quality, and even better than today's AVCHD format. In fact, a well shot video on Mini-DV is as good as video ever could be prior to the introduction of High Definition video to the consumer market.
Today, one would use this device to convert those digital tapes directly to a digital computer file for editing, converting to DVD disk or simply backing up precious videos on your hard drive. There is a direct FireWire IEEE1394 digital interface, S-VHS video output and composite output as well. This allows compatibility with many devices. And, the device has inputs to record to tape, if that is ever of interest to anyone.
The small screen is nice to preview tapes without a computer, and to also view the time code and device setup menu. The output can be configured so the menu data only appears on the small screen and not on the output signal.Read full review...

Piece of junk
This item looks like it came from a war zone somewhere. Cracked, worn scuffs all over.
Half the dials didn't work, tape residue all over it. Just a piece of trash. I opened it, looked at it and repacked it in 10 min and sent it back for a refund.
