ICF-218 better than in-store Dream Machines

I bought this to replace a Sony Dream Machine I got in the mid 80's-
30 years of good service is a testament to Sony quality.
I bought a current Dream Machine but returned it because digital tuning did not pick up stations that
I knew I should get and the reception was poor.
ICF-218 is a discontinued model with analog tuning. The radio tunes in well and the reception is good.
There are more features than I need or want but once set up I can ignore
the time zone, daylight saving feature and other stuff.
Directions are well written (and they will be close by).
The radio was poorly packaged and upon arrival needed to be opened up to reattach the speaker
to the top of the radio.
It is a sturdily constructed piece and had no other mishaps in transit.
The sound is a little tinny compared to the 80's model but I believe it will
last at least a decade.
For the price this is a great little machine.

Can't read the clock display unless room is pitch black - difficult to adjust dimmer settings

Good sound for an inexpensive clock radio, HOWEVER...the display is so dim it is barely readable - even after spending nearly an hour before managing to get it to it's brightest setting. (YouTube "how to adjust brightness on a Sony dream machine ICF-C218".) It works well for music at work, but I had to keep my other clock radio because this one is so dim...so now I have TWO clocks on my desk - one for music (this one) and one for the readable clock. I've seen several other reviews regarding this, and they aren't kidding. I would not buy this clock radio again because of this. If the display could be made bright enough to read and there were a simple way to adjust brightness, I might consider a newer model.Read full review...

OK but for the dim display

This radio is a direct replacement for the same make and model. It was necessary to replace the original due to a switch that broke after many years of use. The new replacement has one problem - its display is exceedingly dim. Too dim. Bummer.Read full review...

This clock radio is simplistic and easy to use it has a green led that's easy on the eyes .

Pro's, This clock radio is simplistic and easy to use it has a green led that's easy on the eyes .
Con's, I bought the same clock radio as a present and it worked great the only thing was the led numbers on the clock became dim after two years so I bought this same model for it's simplicity and it was reasonably priced . Read full review...

Dream Machine - Sony

I love this clock radio! Its slim, and small enough to fit on a bedside table. Easy to use all the features like alarm, falling asleep to music, snooze.

My favorite clock radio-bought this one as a backup to the one I have had for years

I have the same product bought many years ago and wanted another just in case mine died. I hoped the used one would be in working order but was taking a chance. Happy to see it works.

Easy to program, nice looking.

Nice looking clock. I own the ICF-C318 dual alarm and purchased this for my wife. The clock gets a passing grade from me except for the fact the battery backup does everything it is supposed to besides sound the alarm??? Really? As soon as power is restored the alarm triggers. Very bad design. My ICF-C318 works fine when no power is available and is running on the battery. Read full review...

Good little radio, good sound

I bought this little radio for work, good quality, its used in good shape, I can’t find good radios ( Sony) even at Walmart they don’t sell radios at the store anymore, all are speakers for WiFi.
Good sound without antenna.Read full review...

It has passed the test of time

I am not really confident when it comes to electronics. I never considered a clock radio to be technical, but in the last year I have purchased two previous clock radios that that I could not make sense of the instructions.
My husband has had a Sony Dream Machine for about fifteen years with no problems. I tried to find one and found that it has been discontinued. When I found this one on ebay I decided to give it a try. It is looks like new and it WORKS! I is very easy to operate and is compact so it doesn't crowd my nightstand. I am very happy with it.

Simple clock - needs a dimmer

Good:
The clock is simple and functinal with a good alarm sound, which is harder and harder to find.
easy alarm set time toggle
battery back up
large numbers
DST adjust

Not so good:
A dim light option would be nice
the Alarm Off should be a button not a dial
