I am SO GLAD to have found a quality DVD copy of this show!!!

I've watched this mini-series at least three - maybe four times - previously; when it was originally broadcast, once using Netflix DVDs and another time or two from badly done VCR copies.

It's some of the best "television" I've ever seen and I was anxious that I have another shot at it.

Subtitles are available for the spoken English - and some of the Japanese - but mostly we are left in the same position as the protagonist - i.e. understanding very little of the Japanese - but that's by design.

I'm only part way through Disc 2 of 5 but, thus far, product quality is excellent. My biggest problem is just to not to binge my way through. I've made a decision to read James Clavell's book again - and I almost never read a book twice.

If you've never seen it, I think you'll enjoy Shogun. If you have seen it - and liked it - you'll enjoy watching it again.

shogun

The shogun dvd was very entertaining but I question the rating of excellent condition. Approximately half of the first dvd discontinued playing so we didn't get the beginning of the story. Then again in the 4th dvd there were several times when the dvd stalled and sputtered so we had to wait for it to operate effectively again. We didn't mind too much since we got a good deal, but I question the rating of excellent for it. Lower the rating and it is probably a much better deal.Read full review...

Great movie, fair price

I have seen Shogun before and found it very entertaining and real and I wanted to see it again and it wasn't available at my local library, so we ordered it. It was in new condition and only had one small hangup in the DVD that cleared up quickly on the 4th disk.Read full review...

Classic TV movie

This made for TV movie is a historic look into the Shogun of Japan from the 1600s. The characters are engaging and story never gets boring. The movie is 8 hours long but you won't regret it. I watch this movie once a year and I love it. Read full review...

A masterpiece

Even with all the talented people it took to make this mini series, few could have seen the masterpiece they were creating. This production, a made for TV mini series, took America by storm. To restate the story, after four
decades, would be redundant. A love story set in 16th Century Japan arguably captivated more viewers than any movie before or since. Its theatrical, powerful magic still works. Shogun is a masterpiece. For the world of people who love movies and appreciate great stories being told well, there are two categories of people: those who have seen
Shogun and those who have not. If you have not been enriched by this beautifully crafted mini series, you owe it to yourself to join those of us who have.

Fascinating and so much to learn of Japanese culture in the day.

I absolutely love Shogun. I recall watching it as a series on TV about 16 years ago approx. It fascinated me then and now to actually own a copy and can watch it whenever I want to. I am on cloud 9. I try to remember some of the words and find them remarkably easy to remember. Going to Japan is definatly on my bucket list. Read full review...

Shogun - Showcase of excellent TV

A wonderful story filled with three dimensional characters admirably portrayed, "Shogun" captures and holds attention from the first moment to the last. What we westerners interpret as barbaric is turned on its ear, as we see that the Japanese who torture, view human beings as nameless insects, and treat women like slaves see the English "invader" as the barbarian. Richard Chamberlain is at his finest in this series, exhibiting a masculinity I did not know he possessed. His performance is matched by each and every other player in the cast especially the operatic-voiced John Rhys-Davies, and, in particular the Japanese troupe. The themes of beauty, love, loyalty and honor are overshodowed by the evils ever present in mankind including strong mistrust of the church - and with good reason.
The special features were fascinating. Seeing the cast some twenty years later, and out of costume, was a treat. Learning of the trials and tribulations the production company underwent during the process of filming provides a worthwhile education.
I am thrilled to own this collection, and, as some time passes, I know I will watch it again with the same interest I had when I first saw it nearly 30 years ago. I am eager to introduce it to my grandson as well. He will be fourteen on his next birthday, and will surely be able to appreciate it then.

Exciting miniseries based on James Clavell's book, SHOGUN.

Based on fact, this is an exciting mini series of Clavell's marveous book, Shogun. The characters are vivid and exciting Richard Chamberlain is marvelous, as is the great Toshiro Mifune as the Shogun. Beautifully photographed, acted, and written. The history of feudal Japan must also be considered as a main character.Read full review...
