Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr Re-invent Sherlock Holmes

The classic character from literature, the indomitable and quirky Sherlock Holmes, has been portrayed numerous times on screen. In fact, two current TV series follow his continued adventures and a new feature film starring Sir Ian McKellan just came out this year.

What makes this version stand out is the combination of action director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Both Barrels, Man from UNCLE) and the chemistry of it's stars. Ritchie creates a vivid image of Victorian London, giving a gritty coal-stained look while showing the grandeur of England in a time when the sun truly never sat on Victoria's empire. The story is very engaging as Holmes matches wits with the dark and sinister Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) who has concocted a plot that threatens the whole of Britain.

Richie's style is abundant in the numerous pursuits and amazing fight scenes where Holmes' lightning mind allows him to visualize his moves and counters in slow motion before unleashing them on his opponents.

Robert Downey jr dons a British accent as Holmes in all his quirky but occasionally cold and blunt manner. Jude Law creates the perfect Dr. John Watson as Holmes' conscience, confidante, and blood brother. The two men come across as lifelong friends, who've fought side by side countless times. The subplot focuses on Dr. Watson impending marriage which Holmes feels threatens that partnership while Sherlock wrestles with his own matters of the heart; in the form of criminal Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams).

I truly love this movie with it's wit, performance and quick action. I've seen it numerous times and can still watch it again and again.

Lousy mystery

I really was looking forward to this movie with Robert Downy Jr...
... but alas, I was totally let down.
I kept nodding off and it took me 3 watchings before I completed it.
For me, it was just plain too difficult to understand, & I kept going "hunh‼️".
I know there's people out there that loved this flick, but for me I was not entertained, and quite frankly, I just found it quite boring.
I also have the 2nd Sherlock Holmes bluray, but I can tell you right now, I'm not in a hurry to see it.. if I ever even do.
The price was ok, as I purchased it used, but if I would've purchased it new...well then I'd have to say "Rip Off".

Iron-Man Goes British Sleuth in 'Sherlock Holmes'

The first of two movies based on the British detective Sherlock Holmes, this same-titled movie may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it. The plot revolves around a secret society whose leader is intent on taking over the British government and rearranging global power structures, with him as head honcho. His method to accomplish this is ostensibly based on Black magic, but the hyper-intelligent Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr) is determined to expose the scoundrel as being a charlatan and a traitor. Jude Law plays his assistant, Watson, while Rachel McAdams plays Watson's fiance and an accomplice (but who is she really the accomplice of?). Guy Ritchie directed this movie, so it seems to go in a thousand different directions at breakneck speed. A cute facet of the movie is Sherlock Holme's continuous experimentation on Watson's dog, which he uses as a guinea-pig for various potions that he concocts. The dog spends much of the movie unconscious a s a result.Read full review...

Sherlock Holmes (Blu-ray Disc, 2010)

After finally catching serial killer and occult "sorcerer" Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson can close yet another successful case. But when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must take up the hunt once again. Contending with his partner's new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the dauntless detective must unravel the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic - and the deadly embrace of temptress Irene Adler. An incredibly action/mystery story that also has great character development and brought to life the incredible partnership of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Mark Strong is terrific as the villainous Lord Blackwood. In addition to the great acting, the movie was visually stunning with 19th century London come to life. Terrific movie.Read full review...

It like eating Thanksgiving dinner before a marathon- painful

Great actors being great- the action ADHD jigjaggy movement was the killer of what could have been a great charcater makeover. I love action movies but this was an established character and a loved personna that was crushed. My husband begged to leave the first 5 minutes. The story line was trounced for the sake of the action, we never ever fall in love with the lead character and that is tragic because: Who does NOT want to be Sherlock Holmes? Cinematics were dark and felt very dingy, I never felt I got a clean look at anything just more dirty smelly feeling coming through the camera. I wanted some light, lightness of humor, lightness of love, lightness of mood. Not worth the evening it robbed me of. Action lovers- it will not be awesome enough and mystery lovers there is not enoug plot to temp you.Read full review...

One of Downey's Best Movies

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) stars as Sherlock Holmes in this 2010 adaptation on the old classic novels. Jude Law stars as Watson. Holmes and Watson are off to save London from the evil Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong).

Older Holmes fans most likely will try to compare this movie to the movies that starred Basil Rathbone and that would be a mistake. In this incarnation, Holmes has taken a more pronounced approach to solving crimes. He has more whit and more spunk (if you will) and this ads to the story and leads to a few good laughs.

Additional cast members include: Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, Hans Matheson as Lord Coward, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, James Fox as Sir Thomas Blackwood, and Robert Maillet as Dredger

Some may find this portrayal of Holmes someone offensive, other will fall in love with him.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a good who-done-it, and a good movie.

Holmes As Quirky Action Hero

Classic Sherlock Holmes made into an action hero. I still like Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the old movies but the new Holmes movie is exciting and well done. The music is interesting and the movie sets are excellent. It all has an old timey feel with rousing, modern, action sequences added to the mix. Holmes is even quirkier in this movie and Watson more of a serious type.Read full review...

Overacting garbage.

This is the most self absorbed movie I have seen ever. The over acting is to the extreme. Anyone can over act. The movie is pure fantasy. For if the actors can do anything superhuman it becomes more like a superman film. So that's basically all you get with this movie. A bunch of over acting with unrealistic superman garbage.Read full review...

One Great Movie

My husband, son, and I went to the theatre to see this movie on two separate occassions. I had to have it when it came out in the combo pack. I love Robert Downing, Jr., always have, as a actor. I think he really becomes the character that he plays. The setting for the movie in an up and coming industrious London was a nice twist, as well, especially since that's where Mr. Holmes originated. His skill of deductive reasoning was amazing; he was a very smart character. Also Jude Law, another of my favorites, in the character of Mr. Watson was a great sidekick. The film displayed what friendship is all about as the main characters were not simply working partners, but their lives were more intertwined than by the cases they worked on or solved. The introduction of Mary as the potential bride for Watson, making Holmes the 3rd leg in their relationship was also a juicy piece of the movie. Holmes was married to his work and the only woman he truly loved was a criminal. He had no problem bringing her to justice, but it showed his (Holmes) committment to justice and truth. These are nice traits that we'd like to see in the lives of people. If we could simply commit to doing what is right and reach beyond personal gain. The movie was funny and quite entertaining. We're watching it as I write this reveiw and am able to gather some thoughts about the film. The seller of this product has been saved as a favorite. I have a huge DVD collection, probably about 350/400 movies. I love movies because I can get loss in them and see things that I'd really like to be fortunate to see in my lifetime; perhaps....My family thoroughly enjoyed this film and are looking forward to doing further business with this seller.Read full review...

Highly recommend this movie!

Great movie. The interaction between Downey and Law is believable as they play Holmes and Watson.

The way the director takes us through how Holmes processes things in his head is inventive and interesting.

There is cat and mouse play in the "love" interest that Downey's character has with McAdams character. Once again the interaction between these two actors is inviting and believable.

Strong plays a good villian in this movie and proves to be a worthy advesary for Holmes.

This movie is cast very well and features some of the best actors in our day! They effectively take you on a ride into the past with believable portrayals of their characters.

Highly recommend this to anyone! This movie is an action and sleuth film that will entertain and captivate you as you watch it!
