Pop-punktastic

At the request of ebay here's a review:

I bought this item to replace the tape I already had, so I knew what I was getting into. This is the first album by Shampoo and to be honest they aren't to everyone's tastes. Having bombed out in the UK they had major success in Japan, resulting in the song "Trouble," from this album, being used as the theme music for the Power Rangers movie.

Probably the best way to describe Shampoo's music is pop-punk, a little too punk to be pop, but a little to pop to be punk. Playing on a very Lolita image (in many ways the source of their Japanese success) the girls Carrie and Jaqui sing their way through some very catchy tunes. Upon first hearing they sound like a lot of pop out there, but when you listen to the words there are darker undertones. With the exception of "House of Love" all tracks are unique to them and all have a punchy ladette feel. They, not the Spice Girls are the true origin of Girl Power (ever wonder why the Spice Girls never produced a song or album called Girl power? Shampoo were there first with their second album).

Unlike many albums the track titles capture the feel of the album quite well. The opening track "Trouble" is probably their most well known (at least in the UK) and had a resurgence following its use in the Power Rangers movie. It's followed by "Delicious", "Viva la Megababes", "Dirty Old Love Song", "Skinny White Thing", "Glimmer Globe", "Shiny Black Taxi Cab", "Me Hostage" (I still have no idea what this song is actually about), "Game Boy", "House of Love" (the only cover on the album, except for the one with pictures :) ), "Shampoo You", and "Saddo". The girls happily show contempt to everyone whilst revelling in Soho and childhood nostalgia.

A punk package wrapped up in pop paper I enjoyed this album (as did my 9 year old daughter) and it's certain to have many airings. Like most first albums it lacks the maturity of their second, "Girl Power" but in many ways this lack of polish suits their style well. Sadly the girls only managed three albums and their third was self-published (and so rare and hard to find, if anyone has a copy they want to part with...) and so Shampoo have disappeared into music history. If you like your pop to have a bit more bite than the usual bland, manufactured rubbish that fills the charts you could do much worse than look here.
