Bang for your metal jazz and fusion buck!

I put this into a 25th anniversary Ibanez rg550 in the bridge position along with the Jeff Beck neck I'm a gigging teaching touring guitarist it's how I make my living... are they bare knuckles? No but then they are much more Suited to a live or Studio environment we're cheating lots of different sounds is important I jump between classic rock metal singer-songwriter and when I'm lucky Jazz and fusion guitar seriously can cover all of it obviously wood plays a factor and Basswood or Alder have a pretty honky tap tone the tb5 seems to accentuate this and even with my humbuckers on without the coil tap I get a ton of quack when it is tapped it is for all intents and purposes a Strat...
It's definitely working man's or woman's pickup

Seymour Duncan Quality Sound

The SD custom sh/tb-5 pickup delivers exactly as his website described: true PAF tone with plenty of edge and crunch.

Compared to say a JB, which I have in most of my guitars, the Custom has a more focused sound. Since it is a ceramic pickup with a more moderate output compared to a JB, the Custom definitely has more clarity under high gain settings.

If you went to Seymour's forums, many would describe it as having a more snarl like attack as opposed to a growl you find with alnico pickups. Some also would say that it has a more "boomier" sound, which I agree with since it has more lower mids with tighter bass compared to a JB. The upper mids are not as harsh either and don't give that signature quack or honk the JB is known for and are rather tame.

All in all, this pickup was installed in an alder bodied guitar with a maple neck and fretboard and is perfectly voiced for rock to metal. Cleans are doable, but sound a bit brittle in an alder bodied guitar, given that is a ceramic pickup. It might sound better in a mahogany bodied guitar, but with proper EQ, this pickup is high quality like any of Seymour's other products.

Great sounding pickup!

Replaced a DiMarzio Super Distortion with the Duncan Custom in an alder bodied BC Rich Gunslinger. The Custom provides a nice bright crunch whereas the DiMarzio was more distorted and compressed. Also noticed that the poles on the Seymour Duncan were exactly aligned with the strings with the Floyd Rose, the Super Distortion's were not even though it was the F-spaced version.Read full review...
