Still great after 20 years. More like Gen Fun!

My original review got deleted so I can't go into much detail, sorry.

This game is fantastic! I grew up on Gen 3 (FireRed\LG, Ruby\S\E) and wasn't sure I'd appreciate Red, but I've been loving every hour of it. Exploring Kanto is very fun and catching\battling Pokemon is just as thrilling as ever.

Newer Pokemon fans may notice that you can't run, but once you have the bike it's not too big of an issue.

The game's many glitches also offer an interesting experience. Missingno. and the "Mew trick" may be the most famous, but there's a lot of other odd things to discover and try out, too.

Just like any other Pokemon game, it has its ups and downs, and is very enjoyable in its own right.
The main caveat of buying this game in 2018, however: as always, you can't get all 150+1 Pokemon legitimately without trading between games, and good luck finding someone else near you in real life who plays Gen 1.

I was excited when I booted this game up to see all the Japanese sprites and play through a have I haven’t before. The cartridge is slightly misaligned, which isn’t terrible. However there were little glitches in the game which ended up coming becoming a problem 7 gyms in. I can no longer swap pokemon out without the game crashing and some of the pokemon have Japanese names again. A little sad, but it will make for a solid display piece now.Read full review...

pokemon red

One of the two original Pokemon titles released in America. An exciting first step in the ever expanding pokemon world, Red and Blue takes you through the region of Kanto; where you collect, train, and battle Pokemon on a quest to become the best there ever was and catch them all. This game sports the original cast of 151 Pokemon; the truest and original test of a trainers metal! Only a select number of those 151 appear in this game, however, and you'll need a friend with a Blue or Yellow version to actually catch em all. For those of you who've played it, you know about its majesty. And, for those of you who've never touched a Pokemon game, this is the place to start

Pokemon red and blue was an instant classic when it came out. While its pretty straight forward, there is potential for very involved strategy. For example, Fire type creatures are strong against Grass type creatures - and also the Ice types. The Ice types are strong against Ground and Grass, and Grass is also strong against Ground. And so on. its a game of strategy and i recommend it if you want to play one of the 2 games that started the pokemon revolution.

Good buy

Game is in great shape and as far as I can tell this is an authentic copy. Saves perfectly since there is a new battery. Shipped fairly fast also. Little pricey but I’d rather pay for quality and authenticity.Read full review...

The original and the battery still works.

Pokemon has been a franchise that's been going on for over 20 years. The original Red and Blue is where it started in the US and despite it being rereleased for the 3DS I still like to play it on my Game Boy sometimes. The original coin cell in the game still saved the game but I don't expect it to last another year.Read full review...

Perfect! 10 out of 10!

I have been wanting to get a hold of this game for forever! The save works, it's not glitchy or anything (not sure if that's possible)! I was super worried about ordering one online cause I didn't want to get burned, but I couldn't ask for better condition at this price! It's worth the buy! 😀😀Read full review...

Pokemon Red Version (Game Boy)

This version of the Pokemon game was released with the blue version. Pokemon red and blue versions have sold millions of copies in the world and they really had some great idea in them and the story was quiet similar to the cartoon.

If you haven't played any pokemon games before (I mean poke yellow red or blue) then you will not notice the difference between them but first I want to say that the best version among these three is the "yellow" one which is released one year later than red and blue.
You choose your pokemon at the beginning, from professor Oak and you begin your adventure by challenging with the grandson of Professor Oak. After that, your mission is to beat 8 GYM leaders and if you do that successfully, you will be eligible for the competition of greatest pokemon masters (Pokemon Leauge).

As you already know the main objective of the game is the same with the one in the cartoon. Becoming the best pokemon master is your primary goal and you are achieving everything just for that title.
The difference between the red and blue versions are the pokemon which can be caught on each game. Without using cheats there are certain types of pokemon in each game and you can't complete your whole pokedex without trading with your friends who are playing the blue version.

As far as I experienced, the yellow one has better photos (graphics for the pokemon in battles) but the gameplay is very similar in each game. However, the pikachu (yellow) version is still the best because you are carrying pikachu with yourself and he is not staying in a pokéball just like in the cartoon!
The matches are turn based and I think they are suitable for a RPG game. Although there are not many options to choose in the game to make it a real RPG. You only choose your name, and your opponents (Gary's) name at the beginning and of course, you choose what pokemon you will play with.

If you are keen on pokémon story and the game, I think you must make a collection of all the games available. Since these two (blue and red) are the first ones they must also take place in your archive. Anyway, as I have just mentioned if you don't own one of them you can't get all the pokemon in your career without cheating.
Well, in fact it would be much better if you are playing with a group of friends. As you can guess, advancing your career in both of the games at the same time wouldn't be a very easy thing to do. Just find a friend who plays the other version than you do, and you can trade your pokémon with each other.

I think that link cable support is a great idea in that game. You can even have a battle with your friend to find out who is better!
but I still would like to stress on the yellow version which is the best ever!

★ Pokémon ★

♫ I want to be - the very best - like no one ever was. ♫

I sing the song occasionally and can STILL name all 150 Pokémon to this day.

I can safely say, there is not a single person from my generation who has not played this game or watched the TV series.

Pokémon was big. It still is big today! Testament to a legendary series with such cute and awesome monsters.

This game is the first installment of Pokémon in the video game genre. The game is well made and the story progresses quite well. The music is also very catchy and you will often find yourself humming it here and there.

I caution you though before you decide to buy this game -- You will not be able to put it down until you've caught all hundred and fifty Pokémon!

★ Heart thumping battles
★ Cute and adorable Pokémon
★ Addiction to completing the game at 100%
★ ♪Catchy music♪
★ Vast areas to explore
★ Many hours of replay value to use the Gameboy Link and battle your friends

This is a legendary game from my early years that I will forever cherish for the rest of my life. I highly recommend Anyone and Everyone to purchase a copy today! You new guys playing that crystal or fiery red versions are missing out on a classic piece of Pokémon history.

Cartridge battery

Would have given 5 stars but...... I wasted almost 4 hours of my life playing the game to find out I couldn't save my progress. Wish I knew that from the jump.
