Great camera, slight dated

This is a wonderful compact camera, great features. It’s exactly like a Leica d-lux-3 at about 40% of the price. It has the same Leica lens!

The only knock it’s a bit dated at its circa 2005 technology. No blue tooth or WiFi, you have to link the camera to a PC to extract the photos or take out the memory card. Video is also s that limited. The model has been updated 4?times since it’s introduction.Read full review...

More Affordable Than Ever

Now that digital cameras have been around for a while there are some great deals out there for anyone who does not have to have the latest and greatest camera. Some of the cameras which were made even 10 years ago can almost be considered classics in this age in which technology is advancing very quickly. Eight years ago 10 megapixels was state of the art for a point and shoot. Add a Leica lens and you’re talking a top notch consumer level if not “prosumer” grade camera. The Lumix DMC LX2 is just such a camera.

This camera originally sold for around $350 at most mail order stores back in 2007 - 2008 and I imagine the Leica equivalent, the D-Lux 2, sold for about $500 or even $600 back then. I recently purchased a near mint Panasonic DMC LX2 on eBay for only $50 & $10 s/h. The camera did not come with the original box or instruction book but it did include lens cap, strap, charger, battery and a rather nice Lumix hard case. Everything works perfectly and there are no scratches, dents or markings on the lens, screen or any other part of the camera.

What I like most about the Lumix is the 16:9 image aspect ratio. Granted any image can be cropped to 16:9 but this is the full size frame on the Lumix so you are not “wasting” any of the image size if you want to shoot in 16:9. You can also choose (cropped) image aspect ratios of 3:2 and 4:3 as well. There is a tab conveniently located around the lens barrel which makes it very easy to select from one of the three sizes. The other thing I like about the Lumix LX2 is the overall design and style of the camera. It is very sleek and simple with no major protrusions other than the Leica zoom lens which sits very handsomely as a “pancake” lens when closed.
The glass of the lens even looks like a what a real lens on a compact camera should like and not a tiny optic shrouded in plastic. It is more reminiscent of the lenses on cameras such as the Minox and Rollei 35s of the 1970s and not like the cheap plastic point and shoot cameras of the 80s and 90s. Speaking of the lens, the image quality of the Lumix is very good. I can’t be very specific but for general picture taking I don’t see any flaws in it. Overall picture quality may not be on par with my Nikon 1 or Fuji X10 but I believe it still holds up well for a camera in its class which today might be considered average to above average for a compact digital camera. It is worth noting that the Leica DC Vario - Elmarit 28-112 (35mm equivalent) zoom lens is the same lens on the Leica version of this camera. The only obvious difference I can discern between the Panasonic and Leica version (which is also made by Panasonic) of this camera is that the Lumix incorporates a small grip on the side in place of the Leica red dot logo. A purist might think the grip detracts from the overall simple uncluttered design of the camera but personally I find it both appealing and functional.

I seriously doubt I would have shelled out $350 for the Lumix LX2 back in 2007 let alone $600 for the same Panasonic camera with a Leica logo on it but in 2015 it’s a bargain at $60 for a camera I always had my eye on since it came out.Read full review...

Best Investment...

This is a wonderful camera. It's a bit noisy in the dark, but it is wonderful and does all that the Leica Dlux3 will do for a fraction of the price. They are actually twins, same lens and all. It even shoots RAW files. I love the manual everything because I am older and very control oriented. If you get a chance at one of these, it is a good bet. Cheers.Read full review...

Nice compact, but you can get better, cheaper

I have had thus twice, love look, aspect ratio switch, I am not a pixel chaser either, obviously.
It will surprise younthe Zs3 lumix produces bett er pictures, better zoom, but auto only, I sold this again, and just keep my zs3.
