A Cautionary Tale

The novel which was the basis for this film, like many others written before and after it, takes a harsh look at the potential results of the Cold War of the 1950s and 1960s. As brought to the screen, it tells of the immediate aftermath of a thermonuclear exchange between the United States and the USSR, following it to its logical conclusion. Through a mixed bag of characters, granted a temporary reprieve by the fact that the initial destruction took place in the Northern Hemisphere, we see played out the range of emotions which likely would be demonstrated by those facing the predictable, imminent death of humanity.
The movie was nominated for several Academy Awards, but was released in the same year as Ben-Hur, and was shot in black-and-white. In addition, although there are scenes of relatively high humor, and even a little excitement, there always is the undercurrent of impending doom. These characteristics were not favored by academy voters at the time, and the movie was shut out. However, it remains a meaningful tale, and looks realistically at a possible "End Times" scenario. This is mankind, on the way out.

Beware!

Sound and picture quality poor. Second rate sound and picture. Falsely advertised as Widescreen when does not even properly fill a 16x9 screen without using TV zoom which also reduces picture quality to nearly unwatchable. A shame for this classic film. Found much better quality elsewhere using side by side comparison with picture quality vastly superior and proper aspect ratio with no need to zoom.Read full review...

On the Beach

I realize Nevil Shute didn’t like the movie at all. But how often do authors really enjoy movies made from their books? I’ve been a fan of this film and the book since they first appeared. I think the film is the most upliftingly depressing movie ever made. If you don’t understand what I mean, watch it and find out!!Read full review...

I kinda panicked when I saw the Korean script on the box - I was afraid it was the wrong zone, but all is well. I was very impressed with the boat handling details in the first few minutes of the film - in the submarine - I must have missed that detail in 1960. Read full review...

Love this flick

Bought it to show my year 12 history students studying the Cold War and I wasn't sure if the black and white would bore them, but they loved the film.

I'll go a-waltzin' Matilda with you...

I've not seen On The Beach since its release in 1959. The character portrayals are fantastic. The threats and the values of the day are accurately presented. And I'm always relished Waltzing Matilda. And the Aussies are great people as I served with them in Vietnam in 1968 and I spent many, many weeks in Sydney on business in 1999. Next shout's on me mate.Read full review...

Mans uncontrolled lust for power!

Great picture but what does it say about the ways people end their lives when life is over Is there not a God to seek when these things come upon us to give us hope beyond this life!

ON THE BEACH

i'm a big fan of old movies. This is one that comes out of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Good acting, compelling plot,.B&W photography at its best, and a all-star cast. The theme of extension may be a bit too morbid for some, but I recommend it highly.Read full review...
