Possibly the best "non-pro" digital camera available!

Once I made my decision to enter the digital era of photography some 15 years ago, my first purchase was an Olympus E-20n. Since then, I have owned 4 Olympus cameras. Number five is this OM-D E-M5 Mark II.

For a brief period, I did switch to Nikon (D90 & D7100), but went back to Olympus with the OM-D E-M10, which is a superb value in its own right.

I marked "NO" on the question "is it easy to use?" because of the complex (albeit comprehensive) menu system. But, if you want to just put it on "automatic," then you are ready to shoot and will get excellent results.

My main motivation to upgrade to the E-M5 was the 5-axis image stabilization system, with the weatherized body/lens being a close second. Being an old guy, my hands are not as steady as they once were. When doing my landscape/scenic work, the camera is always on a tripod of course, but for nearly every other type of photography, I loathe having to lug around a tripod (again, a factor of aging!). So, being able to get good, sharp images while shooting free-hand became quite important.

I have to say, I am impressed beyond my expectations regarding the stabilization system this camera uses! As can be seen in the accompanying photo, shot hand-held at 600mm, it does indeed deliver amazingly sharp images.

Another favorite feature of the E-M5 is the four custom function buttons that allow me to pre-program the camera with my preferred settings for the main genres of photography that I shoot. I can switch from landscape to sports to glamour with just the press of a button!

The articulating view-screen is another useful feature for me as I am able to get low angle shots without having to get down on my knees or even sitting down.

This camera is loaded with many other features, some which I'll probably never use, but may be of interest to the casual shooter. For example, it is capable of taking amazing video, but that is something I am just not interested in.

I deliberated quite a bit in deciding whether to get the E-M5 or the pro-E-M1, but in the end, decided the advantages of the more expensive E-M1 wasn't worth the price difference for my kind of photography.

Finally, and this not unique to this model, the "Olympus color" is simply the best there is!

My recommendation: sell/trade that clunky, heavy DSLR and go MIRRORLESS...the Olympus way!

Still an unbelievable camera

The Olympus E-m5 Mark II is a fantastic camera with beautiful image quality, ease of use, and light enough to carry with you so you don't get tired as easy. The Lenses are usually half the size of DSLR cameras and therefore you can carry more. I simply love this camera. Read full review...

Much better than I expected

Because of it's affordability and it's 5-axis stabilization and an immediate need for a still camera, I bought this one after much research between some professional and some consumer cameras. I knew I may be using it for video as well so these things were very important to me:
5 Axis stabilization
Timecode
Audio input

and it has all three.
At first I thought it's tiny size would be a problem and even considered buying an attachment to make the handle larger but rapidly became accustomed to the small size. The timecode is useful but does drift over several hours when on Free Run with my Zoom F8. For the money, Olympus has done an excellent job.
Compared to my AF100 the low light on this is great! I can only attribute this to the difference in technology that has taken place over the years. When both are set to 3200 ISO the AF100 is completely unusable. The EM5 II is very usable, even at 6400 (max for EM5ii) it's not too grainy. Mine was a refurb so I saved $300 off new, But even at the B&H price of $900 it's still a great camera.
I almost forgot! It's weather sealed as well. That's not really something I look for in a camera but on a corporate shoot the other week we went out on a boat in a foggy bay. I didn't have to worry about my camera because I knew it was weather sealed.

Rugged lightweight camera with great features, still worthwhile in 2022

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II is a small, rugged, weather-sealed camera with superb image stabilization that produces excellent images, especially when raw captures from the camera are processed with the latest generation of imaging editing software. Its compact size also makes it a great camera to take underwater in a waterproof housing, and it is also a great web-streaming camera.Read full review...

I need a camera that is compact, well made, customizable, and produces high quality images, and this camera fits the bill. Excellent RAW capability and the video does not disappoint (for coming out of a point-and-shoot size camera).Read full review...
