Great walk-around lens

I bought this as an "Event Photo" lens for my full frame camera. It focal length is ideal for my style of photography (I learned this by using a Nikon 12-24 on a APC camera).
Much of my work is architectural - you could use this lens, but the distortion at 18mm is quite pronounce and you'll have to "fix it in Photogshop" - personally I prefer to use the 17-35 or 14-24 for interior photos.
This is a good, inexpensive lens that works well for events and will be a dandy "vacation lens."
Not exactly pro grade, but is you shoot RAW and know Photoshop (and have the time) you can make it work for you

SMOOTH AND TACKY!

I bought this Lens to fill a gap in my Higher performance category lenses.
After reading exhaustive reviews and looking at sample photos on line I decided to go for it.
The close focus pictures blew me away!
Being careful to look out for straight lines near the edges of the photo I was able to capture super tack sharp pics with my Nikon D80. I have been shooting flowers and new growth for a project and the difference between what this lens captured and my 50mm 1.4D lens/24-60 2.8 sigma was worlds apart.
I played with the linear challanges and they are present but barely noticable compared to the other attributes of this lens.
If you want vivid colors this lens is also a strong performer. I tested against the 50mm 1.4 and 35-70mm 2.8 and found better color results in the orange, red and violet/purple color range.
Close focus is excellent and by just stopping down to 4.5 @ 18mm i was able to get a wider depth on the surface of the flower and still maintain a brilliant bokeh around the tulip.
Many others have commented on the merits of this lens and most think the results are great for a mid-range lens.
People are also performance strenghts of this lens.
I was at a Team party and needed to take a few shots of a large group. in horrible shooting conditions I used my portable flash Quantaray XLF- 50 fliped down the Diffuser and zoomed to 18mm.
The results were Great! I took 3 shots total 18mm f3.5, 21mm f4.0, 18mm f5.6.
All three shots were useable from a quality standpoint. The last on is the one they used in the newsletter due to beter sucess with team members posing.
I know reviewers like K. Rockwell think the kit lens can do the job well but I think this lens perform a clear cut above in richness in image quality and beauty on close focus bokeh. Focus is fast and sharp and it performs like you have 5 fixed length lenses all capable performers at there respective lengths. 18,21,24,28,35.
I highly recommend it for Artistic and Group use.

Excllent Lens!

The lens came from Japan in the exact condition as described. It arrived 2 days before it was scheduled, and was delivered in person by a semi-private carrier. Just make certain that your camera can couple & meter "thru the lens" ( many can't) since it is an older AF, not AF-S. I have already taken a couple of hundred shots with this lens. The lens arrived clean with no internal dust or mold, and it performed exactly as I had hoped, if you are thinking of a well priced , reasonably fast, non-professional, wide angle zoom that is well built, this one is a fine choice, & it works great on my Nikon Df.Read full review...

Bargain ultrawide zoom!

Nikon does make two better (and still in production) ultra-wide zooms, but they cost $1000+ more.
For a little more distortion, and a little slower, you get a real bargain, and it's small and light. A good first ultra-wide.
If you find you really like the effect, you could always trade up and empty your wallet later.
Designed for film and FX digital.

Don't buy this lens for DX digital - there it's no wider or faster than the kit lens, and won't autofocus on the low end cameras like the D40.

Excellent lightweight Wide angle

This lens is an excellent FX lens; if you are on the go and traveling a lot. It has great focus and clarity. My subjects are sunsets and night shots of buildings. I tested the lens and I was able to capture a great sunset last week.Read full review...

Great Low-Cost Wide Zoom from Nikon!

This winner of a wide zoom is good on a 35mm film body and even better on a DSLR. I bought mine when I was still using an N90s and I've continued with it through F100, F5, D1/H/X and now D2X cameras.<br>
The 18-35mm Nikkor is not as fast, nor is it quite as sharp as it's sibling 17-35mm AF-S. It is, however, still exceptionally sharp with good contrast and low distortion. Focusing is plenty fast even without a built-in silent wave motor and the 18-35 is lightwieght with good handling. Unless you really need the extra 1mm on the wide end, the faster f2.8 aperture, or AF-S focusing speed, at about one third the cost of the 17-35, the 18-35 f3.5-4.5D Nikkor is very hard to beat.

Totally WORTH it- a MUST Have Lens

This is a GREAT lens- under the radar for most who are fixated on the more popular 17-35 f2.8….but $$$ more. I love this focal range….allowing for Real Estate interior photography, to environmental portraits, to Landscapes, etc. it’s VERSATILE, very sharp, and should be considered a lens “staple” for Nikon shooters ok with old glass. Works great on my D4 and 750.Read full review...

Get one if you're on a budget. If you need perfection, get the 16-35

Good lens for it's price when bought used. I would think twice before buying one new, because the "new" price is a bit high.
Imeges are sharp in the center, CA and flare are low. AF is very fast.r>On the downside: Edges are no better than "acceptable". Extreme corners are really bad at every aperture.
I rate it 4*, because you can find it cheap and get something out of it. It's a good budget lens, but it's not a great lens.Read full review...

Great images for not a lot of money

Zoom or Prime? Yes, you can get better picture quality using Nikkor 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm prime lenses. The difference would be noticeable on fine-grain slide film under a powerful loupe. But for those folks using an FX format Nikon DSLR, the convenience of carrying this lens instead of the other 4 is well worth it UNLESS you intend to print A1 poster-sized wall-art from your digital images. The results from this lens viewed on my 24inch computer screen or my 42inch HDTV screen are much more than acceptable ... they are down-right amazing.
Zooms are still harder to manufacture than primes and we have to expect to sacrifice some resolution and contrast to get all those focal-lengths packed into just one lens. And, yes, it is a wide-angle lens so there is bound to be some distortion of horizontal lines. This lens wasn't designed to photograph them anyway, so just don't. But for sweeping landscapes, shoot with confidence and then kick-back in your livingroom and view great images on your flat-screen TV.
