Fantastic camera at a bargain price.

This was Nikon's flagship semi-pro camera when it first came out in 2007 and sold for around £1,200 for the body only. Now it is phenomenal value and a great starting point for people like me who want to start taking their photography more seriously. The external controls allow you to change settings easily without having to bore down into programme settings.
It has a very sturdy body, and is not a lightweight camera. It can take 6 frames per second, or 8 if you combine it with a battery grip.
Compared to many modern cameras it isn't as good in low light conditions and doesn't have a video function (the later D300S does).
For the price it goes for now you couldn't ask for a better camera.Read full review...

Do not think this camera is an 'easy' option. I have purchased a detailed 'How to' explanatory book. The features this camera contains is mind blowing; a real challenge even for experienced photographers. Yet I love it; apart from the weight! Its like having a workout carrying it around. A camera that can still surprise you.

The D300 is a very good older DSLR for people with large hands. It is dependable and weather-resistant, while 12 megapixels is still good enough for A3/A2 printing. Modern semi-pro DSLRs are designed to create sharp ultra-realism, which goes against what older cameras were designed to do, which was to manage tone. The D300 cannot compete with the low light specs of modern offerings but it can still impress. A great DX crop pro DSLR

I bought my Nikon D300S DSLR recently to replace another Nikon DSLR a Nikon D5100, although the d5100 is a newer model, with more megapixels
Better processing engine etc, it was cheap and plasticky by comparison , the image quality was ok,
I am a semi pro photographer ( starting out) and the autofocus could not cope, so I bought my D300s of of EBay for a very good price and I am very glad I did, the D300s blows the other Nikon totally out of the water, the auto focus is sharp like a razor, fast like lightening, shoots 7 frames a second if you need it too, will go up to 8 frames a second with the d10 battery grip,
And the image quality is well superb, it might only have 12.5 million pixels but boy,
It's in a different league to Nikon's prosumer DSLR'S
It in my book knocks the stuffing out of the d3001 and the d5100 and d7000,
and even will give the new d7100 a good run for it's money and in the build quality stakes because it's got professional build all magesium weather sealed body, it's far better built and I think better set up by nikon in the factory,
So have no fears if you want quality in every dept buy the nikon d300s you won't be sorryRead full review...

Great camera

I love the D300S, it's autofocus is very fast and the results are top quality. Robust but well balanced with a 18-200mm lens. The fact that the sensor has 'only' 12.1MP is immaterial as the pixels are much larger than those on more modern cameras - Ideal for action photography as well as portraits and landscapes. Excellent camera with lots of features

I use a Nikon D700 but the shutter is noisy, and as I photograph horses in an inside arena I needed something quieter so I bought a D300s as well. The quality is excellent, the dual card slots are a great advantage as I am sometimes between 2 arenas and have to switch quickly from one to other and identify them at the end. 7fps without the power pack is extremely useful and it uses all the same accessories, batteries, power packs and lenses as the D700. Still in my opinion the best crop sensored entry level Professional DSLR money can buy.

I now have a pair for my Business.

As they say "Canon's are made by Engineers for Photographers" and "Nikon's are made by Photographers for Photographers" end of story...

Great dslr. Although it is old by camera standards, it beats the hell of many newer models, in tems of strength, build quality, advanced settings, low light performances and picture quality. Nikon D300
