Great single player, not so great online

When I first reserved NHL11 I was eagerly looking forward to unwrapping it and playing the first game. The first few days of the game were great, strategic hockey with the emphasis on team play and passing. Pretty close to the real game. I, being a long time player & fan was elated. Finally the PERFECT hockey game!
Then cam the problems. EA Sports (the game's manufacturer) decided to release "tuners" which affected the way the game was played. No longer was team play & smart passing important as these tuners allowed for more arcade style hockey which is fine for some but not for others.
It is possible to adjust and compensate for these settings via the extensive slider system in the games menu which allow for almost complete control of the ONE PLAYER mode. Online versus play however is not customizable with thes sliders so if you enjoy playing against others online, then you may be dissapointed if you are a fan of simulation style hockey games.
I guess that would be my only complaint but it is a big one since i love to play online.
Long review short, next year I will wait and RENT NHL 12 before spending my hard earned $60 on an arcade hockey game that I could have played on the Sega Genesis.
I just hope EA Sports wises up and releases a game catering to the true hockey enthusiast.

Good ole hockey game!

when a new sports game comes out the biggest thought on peoples minds are "whats some new features"? well if you played any ea nhls in the past couple of years then you probably already know that the changes between years arent that significant. but this years changes are actually pretty good one. there are some cool new gameplay features in the game that make your experience more authentic such as broken sticks, which can leave you playing without a stick for a time, controlled hip checks, improved physics, user celebrations, and added dekes such as flipping the puck in the air in order to jump over a laying down body. A new game mode was also brought into nhl 11 called "Hockey Ultimate Team" . in "hut" mode you buy packs of cards like you would at a hobbie shop , and the player cards you recieve become part of your active roster. this mode kept me interested for a very long time and there are many offline and online tournaments you can compete in for in game currency to buy more packs of cards. the online play in nhl 11 has improved greatly compared to recent years because alot of the glitch shots have been eliminated resulting in more realistic online team play.overall i am very pleased with the nhl series and they seem to be getting better and better as they go.. hopwe this review helps!Read full review...

Great graphics, sounds, and feel but still plenty of bugs and AI issues

The controls and details are improved, but the Computer AI can still be infuriatingly stupid at times, the Be a Pro mode is left largely underutilized and unexplored, and there are moments where I wonder if the creators have ever actually watched a hockey game.

There's plenty of other good features to keep you busy though, and the graphics are slick.

Solid, fun, addicting NHL game

Best NHL game on the market right now. With many options and different things to do both in singleplayer and in multiplayer, replay value for this title is very high. I'm looking forward to NHL '12 later this year and hope EA Sports improves on their current model and add a little more realism (too many men on the ice, end-of-the-play scruffs, pucks hitting players and injuring them, etc)Read full review...

Best NHL game by EA thus far.

The things I like about it is how they incorporated the CHL (Juniors A - Canada) and the KHL (Russia) into the game. Also love the improvement in game play. Whether it be the faceoffs or the tapping of the stick to call for a pass, it seems they have made it feel more like an actually NHL game. And for someone who plays ice hockey, I like attention to little details. There are some things I still think that should be addressed. One is the font size. Its extremely small. Hard to see in the transactions/scores/etc menu in "Be A Pro" and other game modes. Also hard to see the stats they show in the middle of a game. Another problem that they have not addressed over the last couple of years is the goalie career stats. They only keep record of points as if they are a regular skater. They don't keep record of wins, losses, GAA, save %, etc. And they don't show all the career stats as a whole. They only go back to a couple years back (i.e. 2005-2006). Clearly people were playing before then. Nonetheless, a great game. Would definitely recommend for anyone who loves hockey, let alone sports.Read full review...

Playing as you read this.

Not much of a hockey fan, but love ea hockey games. This game is very addictive against online players. Takes some practice getting your dekes and shots down. I love this because I don't like to master a game the first time I play it. Strategy is important as well as improvisation, so as to not be too predictable. The only down side to this game for me is the replays. Most of the replays that are shown before face-offs and after goals are the hits being delivered and not the goals scored. It is disappointing after a well executed fast break with a few dekes timed perfectly to score a goal and be shown a replay of a guy getting laid out two periods prior.Read full review...

SO far SO good

Fun game, only had it for half a day and already played/tested a few of the game modes. Be a Pro: really fun but need to get better before I try it. Be a GM: also very entertaining but only if you are truly into hockey. Finally I started a full season and in my first game I lost 3-2 but came back to win 7-5 real fun!Read full review...

Awesome game!

This game is awesome! I upgraded from the NHL 07 for 360. The general gameplay is exactly the same so it was easy to switch to this one. But there are a lot of new additions to 11: players can lose/break sticks, the fights are much more involved, and the graphics are obviously better as well. My cousin and I played the playoffs and had a really fun time. If you enjoy playing hockey I highly recommend this one.Read full review...
