My Favorite FM Synth Ever

The Korg opsix is absolutely the best and most fun FM synth I have ever used. There are lots of menus but most functions are just a few shift functions away with knobs to tweak the menus’ parameters. First off this can load DX7 sysex if you’re so inclined. I never did this, opting instead to design all my own sounds. Sounds from the hardware are compatible with the software version and vice versa. There are six operators that each get their own ratio and level controls. There are three envelopes, three LFOs, and three effects with a mod matrix of 12 routings for some pretty in depth control. After just a little bit of use the menus are a breeze to navigate and actually quite fun. There are multiple operator types for a variety of sound shaping options. I do find that setting even slightly rolled back amp envelope attack and decay times is always more pleasing that fully gated sounds. This sounds WAY more natural to my ears as sounds occurring in nature don’t just come on. They rise and fall. Honestly this synth has so much to offer that it’s hard to write it all up. All I can say is that I’ve never been able to think so clearly in an FM sound design setting. It’s definitely the most intuitive FM sound engine I’ve ever used. The keys are very nice and it’s great that you can have different time divisions for the sequencer that, along with unquantized settings, allow for much longer sequences. You can design your own algorithms but there are so many on board here that I never found myself doing that. The Korg Opsix is excellent and I’m excited to see how Korg follow this up.Read full review...

Amazing. More than FM to be sure.

I wish they hadn't stressed the FM nature of this synth. The six oscillaters (operators) can literally do any sound. It's a synth I use every day and cannot remember how I got on without it. They interface is intuitive and other makers took take a lot of lessons from this board.Read full review...
