Great Game

I first played "Kengo" many years ago and still love it. You pick one of two or three samurai characters and join a ryuha for kenjitsu training.
The goal is for you to become the most badass samurai in Tokugawa-era japan but the training won't be easy... First you must train your abilities. You must sit under a waterfall to raise your spirit, visit a Zen-master to raise your focus and ki, carve through a bamboo forest to improve your speed, suburito with a bokken against a post to become stronger, or practice some psuedo-iaido training where you either cut out the flame of some surrounding candles, or kabuto-wari but be careful because anything less than perfection will break your priceless sword trying to cut the helmet.
Once you're done with your training you may then set out on a musa-shyugo and challenge the other schools to both learn their fighting moves and if you beat their Souke you collect their school's sacred sword which gives you a badass finishing move when you use it.
THEN!!! you have to compete in the Shogun's tournaments beating other fighters for more renoun and xp. couple all this with randomly being challenged to duel in the streets, cameos by famous historical swordsmen (even Musashi Myamoto makes an appearnce; that's not his name in the game but, he's got a giant bokken made from an oar which may just be a shout-out but whatever).
The game is nearly impossible to actually "beat" because at a certain point in the game your stats modulate depending on which training scenario you do. For instance the waterfall training will raise your spirit a lot but lower your stamina just a little bit. Each of the other training modes respectively raise and lower different stats making it harder (sometimes maddeningly so) to max everything out in just one sitting.
This is an awesome game waaaaaaaaay ahead of its time and unfortunately neglected. "Kengo" was based on the Square-Enix engine crated for "Bushido Blade" on the Playstation 1 but, I think it's a lot better paced and interesting than a mash-em-up button-tapper. If you wanna learn the Japanese sword for real get out and learn kendo/iaido (I did, it's awesome fun). If you wanna become a feudal samurai and slash it up then you've got to get Kengo.
