Typical modern OO gauge item

This loco works weel and is typical of items produced in these days originating from China. The motor runs well and uses far less current than the old ones did. However the high percentage of plastic used does give the item a limited life expectancy. The longevity of the old Hornby items will be lost but it works well, I used it as a basis for making a radio controlled version and got batteries and receiver into the tender with no problems. I bought a Mallard and a P2 with similar tender size and have converted those as wellRead full review...

Great loco, tricky for DCC

This is a fine locomotive. The motor is powerful and quiet, and the mechanism runs smoothly. The body casting is cleanly and nicely decorated. For those intending to install a DCC decoder, beware: There is precious little space inside the body shell, and the selection of 8-pin decoders is limited. The Hornby site has a helpful tutorial on decoder installation, but the directions don't specify the decoder used.Read full review...

The R3086 was good buy at a good price .

This locomotive was good value and had excellent running characteristics very quiet and pulled 6 coaches with ease R3086 has its motor in the main boiler so the weight was over the driving wheels, this should always be taken into consideration when buying second-hand A class locomotives. A good locomotive runs very well.

Of the large locomotives that I have purchased over 4-4-0 size this is the first one that will work on my layout. The only item I do think that could be improved by Hornby is the poor flimsy connector for the tender. Surely after all these years there must be a better way than a cheap piece of plastic with a hole to hook on to a plastic peg under the locomotive.

Having said that the locomotive looks very good and runs well pulling a rake of 4 carriages even up an incline without effort.
