Great, affecting narrative

This is a wonderful coming-of-age narrative about the evolution of a Black writer growing up in Jackson Mississippi with a loving but often cruel mother who tried to prepare her son both for the cruelty of the White world and for his destiny as a writer. The language is beautiful, haunting, and a document in the struggle to find his voice in a hostile world. I want to read it again. Read full review...
