Breathing life into William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

This is an average "teen movie" with actors in their mid twenties and above pretending to be teens. It's a love story set around the theme of William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Kirsten Dunst gives a convincing performance in this movie. Her facial resemblance to Emily Deschanel from the television series "Bones" is uncanny in my humble opinion. Sisqo is surprisingly brilliant as an actor in this film. Mila Kunis disappointingly shows she will go beyond any limits to be famous and her role in this film sadly isn't memorable beyond that of being desperate to be famous at any cost.

I like this attempt to bring William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" into the current realm of relevance or existentialism, much like the 1987 film Roxanne starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah did for Edmond Rostands "Cyrano De Bergerac".

What I most liked about the DVD were the performances by Vitamin C, aka Coleen Fitzpatrick. Her performances are limited to the lip sync to The Captain and Tennille's remake of "Love Will Keep Us Together" she does during the opening credits and her duet at the end of the movie with Sisqo singing Earth Wind and Fire's smash hit "September". Hidden in the extra features is Vitamin C's music video for "Itch", which is a little gem of it's own but not relevant to the movie at all.

Overall, if you like movies making attempts to bring historic literature into relevance in current society then this movie is one you don't want to miss. Should you be a fan of Sisqo, Kirsten Dunst or Ben Foster then you won't go wrong by seeing this movie. Colin Hanks makes a modest but well received debut in this film as well. However, if you loath "teen movies" then steer well clear of this title. It's not a bad title for a family viewing with very minimal PG-13 adult language and only one embarrassing sexual innuendo, oddly enough made by the oldest actors in the film.

Just ok

The movie itself was just okay. Not bad, not great. I was amazed at how well Kirsten dunst could sing. It's a shame she doesn't sing more often.

A very funny, and very underrated movie...

Another movie that my daughter stole from my collection... Refreshing and unexpected comedy that on the surface looks like just another coming of age, teen-angst movie. This movie is especially funny for kids (or adults) who have been involved in theatre performaces in high school or community theatre. This is a mindless comedy, so don't expect much in the way of deep meaning.

Plot Summary:
A very simple base story about a teen breakup and re-falling in love... Includes the obligatory embarassing parents, and adolescent oversexed-dog humor... The best part of the movie is in the deadpan Berke Landers, who is rejected by long-time girlfriend Allison. Over the top performance by Martin Short as the drama teacher/director make the school-play into the real centerpiece for this story.

What is truly impressive about this movie is that I do not for one minute believe that the director understood what makes this movie funny. If you listen to the director's commentary, he thinks the comedy is in the toilet-humor and slapstick gags. The REAL humor is in the deadpan performances by Ben Foster, Colin Hanks, and yes, even by Sisqo... And it's one of the best Kirsten Dunst acting performances too. The school-play provides a show-within-the-show, and is a surreal backdrop for most of the humor. The supporting cast did a great job of keeping things light and funny too.

Overall, two thumbs-up in the mindless entertainment category.

Good product - but I'm not sure Shakespeare would appreciate the adaptation

Silly, but somehow still entertaining. I'm a fan of Shakespeare and originally bought the movie to show my junior high students a different interpretation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. And the bizarre fashions/hair styles of the nineties (i.e. Sisqo's hair). I'm reminded of another movie in my collection - Whatever It Takes with James Franco and Shane West. I miss these kinds of teen rom-com movies. They're probably still being made, but I guess I'm just too old to appreciate them in the same way.Read full review...

Great Fun

I love this movie. Fun take on Shakespeare done by teens and directed by a crazy director (Martin Short is fantastic).
