Somewhat Grandiose and Overblown

As a medievalist and writer, I found EXCALIBUR (which is allegedly based on Sir Thomas Malory's LE MORTE D'ARTHUR) rather grandiose and overblown. Case in Point (as Rod Serling used to say): virtually every male character in the film wears armor all the time, literally in every scene, regardless of time or place or action; furthermore, the armor in question is full 15th-century plate, as opposed to the 5th/6th-century composite armor that a historical Arthur would have worn. This practice would be the equivalent of an NFL fullback's wearing his full equipment every day, in civilian life, including at meals. The operatic-style music is equally overblown and Wagnerian, with very little relief from lighter musical themes. Finally, the majority of speeches by most of the male characters are loud and bombastic, so turn the volume down a bit.
However, it is only fair to admit that tastes vary, and one of my longtime friends considers EXCALIBUR high entertainment and has boldly confessed to having watched it seven or eleven times. Each to his own taste.

One of the greatest films made

This must be one of the best movies ever made. Boorman shows with this movie what a great director he is, and I can't wait to see his new movie with Brendan Gleeson and Jon Voigt. Boorman has an excelent eye for how to make art-work of a movie and Excalibur is no exception. He has put together some not-so-famous actors, and yet he managed to make them more trustworthy than most of the more famous actors. It is just sad that it doesn't seem to be Boorman who will be making the saga "Lord of the Rings" into an epic movie. My recommendation to all is: watch this movie and forget about the newly shot mini-tele movie with Sam NeillRead full review...
