This double feature DVD of Motel Hell (along with Deranged) is the cheapest and easiest way to own this hard to find cult classic. Very happy to finally have this for my collection.

Totally disappointed by Motel Hell

This movie made promises it did not deliver. The "killers" in this movie use chloroform on their victims, then bury them up to their necks in the garden with cut vocal cords and a bag over their heads. It is the horror movie equivalent to shooting fish in a barrel. There wasn't even one good kill in the entire movie. Both these movies have notable followings, so they are worth seeing.

Motel Hell is one of my favorite "cult" movies ...though I'm not sure how big a following it has. Imagine Farmer John (the breakfast meat company) at startup and established only within a region before marketing nationally. Instead of a "Mom & Pop" organization, its a Brother & Sister. Before long, you'll see that even though they advertise using only 100% USDA certified beef ...it's not true!

I bought this particular DVD set to replace my VHS copy of Motel Hell, AND because I had never seen "Deranged" before. After reading reviews that Deranged is based on the same true story that inspired Psycho, Texas Chainsaw & Silence of the Lambs, I was intrigued.

Unfortunately, the progress in production quality over the years has relegated this movie's production quality to low (even though it may have been cutting edge when produced in the '70's). Worst of all was the overuse of an old hymn (The Old Rugged Cross) as the background music - this may have ruined that song for me, personally.

A little slow in parts, it was not too painful to watch. Since it's based on a true story that sparked inspiration for so many other films, it was easy to see the connection.Read full review...

One of Savini's first effects film and a freak-fest BBQ

Two very different films, though they go well together enough. Personally I think that "Motel Hell" would be a good double bill with "Mother's Day" and Deranged would go well with "Texas Chainsaw" or "Ed Gein", since Deranged is not a comedy
and Motel is. Motel Hell is entertaining and a bit morbid as well as funny, so any
comedy-horror fan will love it. If you like B-budget movies that are serious you may like Deranged also, it's dark and pretty well acted for such budgets and is
probably the closest film out of all the Gein inspired films that comes close to the actual story of what happened, (Texas chainsaw, Silence of the Lambs. etc..).
This is Tom Savini's first effects film I believe (he did the corpses around the table). I don't know why this is out of print, though it may be due to a short
licensing of one or both of the films. Highly recommended!Read full review...

Motel Hell/ Deranged double DVD

I bought this DVD because I have a nephew into horror flicks and I felt the need to share some of my favorites, it was so great to get this!! The quality remastering was excellent, and the look on my nephews face as we watched this classic was priceless!! I would recomend this to any parent, aunt/ uncle who frequented the drive in's of the 70's and 80's who has a teenager thats into slasher flicks. He's now a collector, and we spend allot of time watching these great camp/horror classics together!!Read full review...

Great old movie Motel Hell wanted it on dvd free other movie deranged never saw it until dvd arrived not bad its the Ed Gein story
but MH is great the way they used to make horror movies simple plot no political correctness just gore and suspense with just a dash of nudity for the kiddies makes you think twice b4 stopping at the little town motel unless your into that sorta thingRead full review...

Campy Excellence!

I have loved Motel Hell for at least 20 years!! Now that my kids are getting big enough to enjoy some of the "classics" I wanted to get this to share with them. Thank goodness for e-bay. It's the only place I could find the out-of-print DVD.
The movie is such a blast. It's crazy and silly and scary and outrageous all at the same time!

Ed Gein Interpretation

Probably one of the best depictions of the story of Ed Gein, despite being a low budget B movie. Not everything is accurately portrayed, but is fairly close. Nice touches of dark humour in the bar scene and newspaper/dinner table scene. Overall, makes it easier to imagine what life must have been like for Ed, secluded alone,in that cold dark farmhouse, with only rotting corpes for companionship.Read full review...
