Nice monitor, but high potential for early power supply failure

I have about ten of these monitors at various locations, and my clients have all been happy with the image quality. The only problem is that some of these monitors have the dreaded faulty capacitors in the power supply, and will therefore fail prematurely. If you Google "1905FP capacitors" you will see the extent of the problem. There are numerous sources for capacitor repair kits for $15, but replacing those components requires soldering equipment and skills. And you need to be adept at getting stubborn plastic cases open! If it were not for the cap problem I would recommend this as a decent mid-range monitor. Because many 1905FP units DO have bad caps, I would suggest you look elsewhere for a used or refurbished display.Read full review...

Great monitor with a great value

Pros:
Good sharpness and colour fidelity
highly adjustable
fair price
Cons:
Lack of advanced image controls
minor colour problems in midtones

With above-average image quality and a competitive price, the Dell 1905FP is well worth the money. The 19in. LCD retains the basic look and flexible design of its predecessors -- although the stand feels a bit sturdier -- and it offers the same height adjustment range of about 13cm. It also smoothly tilts, swivels and rotates from Portrait to Landscape mode. You can lock the monitor at its lowest height position and remove the panel from the pillar by pressing a release button, which makes this display easy to transport and store. A rubber sleeve on the back of the neck neatly holds all cables. Finally, the 1905FP retains some nice extra features, including four USB 2.0 ports (two on the bottom and two on the lower left side) and a connector at the bottom of the panel for the optional speaker module. It comes with both DVI-D and analog D-sub connectors and cables.

The Dell 1905FP delivers better image quality than your average LCD. We tested the monitor at its native resolution of 1,280 by 1,024. Text looked crisp well beyond the range of typical font sizes. Its sharpness matches that of the NEC MultiSync LCD1960NXi. In colour performance, it beat or matched all other competitors, save Eizo's professional-grade ColorEdge CG18. On our DisplayMate-based greyscale tests, we noticed a slight green tint in the darkest shades and a slight pink hue in the lightest. These colour flaws are less pronounced than on most LCDs and shouldn't bother most users. Graphics aficionados, however, should note that we saw mildly washed-out midtone colours in some digital photos we viewed. Still, the 1905FP offers above-average image quality when compared to other similarly priced displays. As is common for LCDs, the 1905FP had trouble displaying a true black, although it was quite deep for an LCD. In our informal DVD-viewing test, performance was about average on the dark end of the greyscale. We could discern fairly dark tones but did miss some shadow details on the DVD. On the light end, we could distinguish very pale greys against a white background. This indicates that the monitor displays subtle shadings well at the bright end, as you might find in editing brightly lit photos or in viewing exuberantly designed Web pages featuring light text on a colored background. We saw minimal streaking in motion tests but noticed some noise and oversaturated colours. Dell offers a standard three-year warranty and lifetime technical support via telephone and e-mail. Our one gripe on support is that Dell no longer includes a full printed manual, but it does ship an adequate setup poster. And it includes a detailed manual in electronic form on a bundled CD and on its Web site.

Dell UltraSharp 1905FP 19" LCD Monitor

We have had about 20 of these monitors at work for over two years, and we have never had any trouble with them. The picture is excellent, especially when connected to a DVI (digital) signal. We have not had any dead pixels in any of the monitors, which is more than you can say for some brands.

Brightness is never a problem, and the included USB port is especially useful.

I highly recommend the 1905FP as a general-purpose home or office monitor. In my opinion the size is just right -- I wouldn't want to use anything bigger on a daily basis. I do recommend installing the Windows XP Powertoy called "cleartype, which makes it easier to read text at the high resolution supported by this monitor. Also, right click on your desktop, select the tab called "appearance," and at the bottom in "font size" select large or extra large fonts. This takes care of most of reading problems caused by small fonts at high resolutions.

I know Dell doesn't actually manufacture the LCD panels, but it has established quite a reputation for high quality and excellent value in LCD monitors.

Versatile, good value at $71

Pros:
- Light weight
- Good picture, vivid well saturated colors.
- Easily pivots between horizontal landscape and vertical portrait orientation
- Easily pivots side to side, left and right, without the base moving at all!
- Easy to use on-screen display, always appears right side up, even in
portrait mode.
- Monitor detaches from base with push of a single button.
- Detachable monitor also mounts to VESA wall mount (not included)
- Thin narrow case around screen, not big bulky border.
- Base has two vertical positions for monitor, up and down, high and low.
- Base holds cables neatly along vertical column
- Base also serves as convenient carrying handle
- Both DVI-D (digital) and VGA video input connectors.
- Built-in 4-port USB hub with two connectors on side and two on back
- Power supply built in, no external power brick
- Works well with PCs and MACs.

Cons:
- When tilted into portrait (vertical) orientation, the two USB ports
(normally on the side) go up on top rather than down on the bottom. This may mean that longer USB cables are required when monitor is in that orientation.
This isn't much of an issue for the two USB connectors on the back.

- Computer evidently cannot determine monitor's orientation (landscape or portrait) through the DVI-D cable, so when you rotate the monitor between the two orientations, you must manually tell your computer to adjust the picture for the new orientation.

Overall, I give this monitor a very positive recommendation for someone looking for a good versatile monitor on a budget.

Dell 1905fp 19 inch LCD Monitor

I bought this monitor for CAD. I am taking a course in AutoCAD and I needed a home work station for practice and homework. This panel is slow so it is not good for gaming, movies or video editing but it has great color so it is well suited for CAD and photo/pictorial graphics. I use it with an older Dell Precision 360 with 3G RAM that I retrofitted with an nVidia FX3000 video card. Most fast panels are 6 bit with 16.2 million color resolution. The lesser amount of colors allow faster response time between refresh cycles. LG uses a 6 bit panel with their f-engine chip to simulate the color response of an 8 bit panel while retaining speed. I have one of these LGs and it works well but the color is still not as true as the older, slower Dell 8 bit panel. I have done side by side comparisons. So it is a trade off at least in the $200 price range. Color or speed. Sure there are faster high resolution professional graphics panels available now but at a substantially greater cost. This does the job that I bought it for and the price was right.Read full review...

Great LCD

With two different versions of this LCD floating around on the market, purchasing a 1905FP can be quite an endeavour.

Regarding the Samsung 20 ms model, these LCDs are created for an office environment, where you spend hour upon hour staring at a screen. High brightness and contrast ratios, low failure rates and the option for either DVI (Digital Visual Interface aka. the White Plug) or VGA (Video Graphics Array aka. the Blue Plug) are exceptional features to these LCDs. Colors on these Ultrasharps are vivid and realistic.

Regarding the AUO 8 ms model, these are decent all-around models for both gaming and office applications. The AUO models are simply not as good as the Samsung on the color range. With a lower contrast ratio and brightness, you just don't get to appreciate the AUO as much. For gaming, however, this model is pretty good. In comparison to other equally priced 19" LCDs (i.e. Rosewill, AOC, AOpen, Low-end BenQs and ViewSonics), this has to come out on the top of the heap.

After selling over 200 of these units on eBay, we've had a return ratio in the 1% range. It's obvious that people who have received these units are quite happy with the performance, the satisfaction ratio is high. With prices on both these models on eBay floating at around $240, this is a great deal versus the 1907FP, which is a mediocre step back from Dell in order to save money and increase the profit margin, as you see the 1905FPs coming back from lease providers.

Exceptional value!

This monitor is not one that you would buy if you are after a state of the art monitor that has all the latest bells and whistles, but it is an outstanding value for those that are not concerned about that issue. I bought it for my grandson and it replaced a 19" CRT monitor that he had been using, so for him it was a great new display, and for me it was a good value since the price was so low compared to anything that I oould find that was new that it was a no-brainer! I would heartily recommend this monitor to anyone that does not need the exceptionally high resolution and wide screen display for their computer, (which I believe is most all of us, save those that work in video and/or cad/cam work). Exceptional value for ordinary folks! Highly recommended!Read full review...

Dell UltraSharp 1905FP (Gray) 19" LCD Monitor

This monitor is totally awesome! Everything is right at my fingertips. It has two (2) hook-ups on the leftside to plug my camera into or read my disk.

There is nothing I dislike about my new monitor. The reason I purchased this monitor was because it matched what I already had. the pride was right and I wanted something that didn't take up alot of space. And I swear by Dell Products.

It is a pleasure to come into my computer room and sign in. The screen is big; but not cumbersome. It was easy to put together and it is so very easy on the eyes. No more headaches!

This monitor rocks when used in a dual display setup.

This monitor is great overall. The added USB ports really help decongest the cable clutter behind my PC. I have 2 of these in a dual display setup which is great for running multiple programs and graphic applications. The only draw back is the resolution limitation of 1280 x 1024 per screen but that is fine for most people. I've also noticed a slight variance in brightness and contrast between the two identical monitors using the same settings. The option of DVI or VGA connections is a nice feature as well. I recommend buying one of these if you are on a budget or in the event that I decide to get rid of mine.Read full review...
