A fave for me and my son

... we often watch this with our dinners on TV trays. Hilarious, sometimes affecting, violent, and with great actors doing great acting. We started this after *Justified*,and on reco of a co-worker, who represented that it's excellent, and with more cursing than any other series, ever. He's right.Read full review...

Deadwood The Bleeping, Bleep Complete Bleep

It has been said before there is a LOT of really gratuitous use of the
F word here; also references to fellatio, and various direct words for peoples
reproductive organs, and body functions. It is my understanding that the folks that produced this show did not find the swear words used by Dakota residents in the 1870s to be quite strong enough, so they 'livened up' the language quite a bit.
Frankly I find it very difficult to listen to.
That said this show works on a lot of different levels. It is VERY well done, from
the aspect of plot, scenery, and all the typical elements that go into making
a big budget cable TV show. The non cursing language is polite, and formal, and
you have to wonder that folks who'se every other word starts with a F or C
etc, are so very well educated and articulate.
So unless you want your kids using terms that would make a WWII sailor blush
I would send em out of the room. However this is a very lush, interesting
and in most way s very good series. I had just watched HBO's "Rome" prior
to watching this one and then watched "John Adams" after. Of the three
I would be most likely to watch "Rome" again.
Historically "Deadwood" is about as correct as your average TV western.
This is the entire series and is over 20 hours long.
Comparing it to say the 70's mini series version of "Centenial".. well there is no comparison. Michener wins hands down.
So if you got nothing better to do for a week, sit down, get out a few
dozen bags of microwave pop corn, prepare yourself to watch your language
for a while afterwards (I am a lay preacher, and do NOT use swear words, but
found myself getting almost a bit linguisticly raunchy after watching this)
and enjoy.
It is interesting, does have some "socially redeeming value" and not a total
waste of time. Which is a lot more then can be said of most of what flashes
before our eyes on the ol flatscreen these days.

Deadwood, the best TV series ever produced

Deadwood is an amazing David Milch production with superb casting and magnificent writing. This set includes commentary by Milch and the complete set of three seasons. The book, Deadwood by Peter Dexter, is also an outstanding book and highly recommended. Do not confuse either the TV series or the book with the typical Western movie or writing. The set, the costumes, the language, and the realism (based on history) of the TV production are second to none. Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant are superb in their roles, as are virtually all of the other characters. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. However, understand that the profanity and violence may be offensive to some. Nevertheless, it was inherent to the time and place of this setting.

The physical production of the series is very nice. Each disc is wrapped in a separate sleeve and placed within a page of a "book" of discs. It is very easy to keep track of the discs, and they are secure in each page. The "book" is contained within a cardboard outer sleeve that is nicely detailed to look like an antique book. I think I prefer the arrangement of these discs over any other set I've used. Each disc has two episodes and various features. Milch comments on some of the episodes with a full hour of the episode and his running commentary, which is informative and helpful and offers insight into both the production and the writing and acting.

Rough, gritty, realistic portrayal

Don't get me wrong, there have been great westerns to come before Deadwood, but none of them really got it right. There is just a reality that some people aren't willing to deal that after 50 years of our history being whitewashed through film and TV, we're finally starting to see the truth. David Milch has done his research and discovered the wonderfully bizarre contradiction of languages used in the old west. Watching the cast of Deadwood converse with a combination of old world English laced with profanity straight from the gutter is incredible and feels right for the first time. Where do people think our language came from? People always want to think that they were the first to do something, when things like profanity, substance abuse and prostitution have been around since before man walked erect.

Along with the incredible dialog and storytelling, David Milch has introduced possibly the greatest character to ever come to TV or film...Al Swearengen. Ian McShane plays Al with the same intense conviction and truth that the character himself lives by. In Al's world things are black and white and never apologizes for a second for living his life by a strict code of morals of his own making. I don't think we've ever seen a character go from crying after a mercy killing to watching a murder he orchestrated stone faced.

This is indeed a special show that is continuing to pave the way for the facts of our history to finally be told with truth...Instead of the whitewashing we've seen our whole lives to make us feel better about ourselves.

the best old west/drama movie ever made!!!

DEADWOOD---
i recommend anyone over the age of 17 that enjoys old western films/drama films to watch this series. the cast does an awsome job depicting what life really was like back in the late 1800s. this is by far the best new age western i've ever seen. from the clothing all the way to how they speak its just like how it was back in the old days. i have traveled to deadwood many times as it is one of my favorite places to visit and just to imagine what all went on back in the old days makes watching the series feel as if you have stepped back into time. i do have to say however this series is not for children. there is alot of swearing. literally ever other word is the f word. there is also nudity and of course murdering. some scenes can be a bit heart renching and very sad also but to make a movie about how life was back then they do a great job of depicting every aspect of the horrible things that happened to people. honestly though please do not let your children watch this film. the main reason i say this is not only because of all the swearing but because the way the women/whores and children are treated in the movie. even i cant believe life was that terrible for humans back then. also the only thing i didnt like about the series was it doesnt keep you on the edge of your seat to watch the next episode like most series are. not saying thats a bad thing but most series end each episode keeping us wandering whats going to happen next with each character in the movie. but i guess a few episodes did keep you guessing. overall i say its definitlly worth buying/watching if you enjoy westerns/dramas. and dont let what happens in season one episode 4 keep you from watching the rest of the seasons/episodes. it gets better and better each episode!!!Read full review...

Deadwood - The Complete Series (DVD)

The only thing anyone could dislike about the series of Deadwood is that it ended far too soon. Cost of production as well as actors scheduling conflict led to the demise of perhaps one of the best shows of all time. As soon as the opening credits roll, you are immediately transferred back in time. The scenery is one of best parts of Deadwood. This is what the old west was like. Too many westerns have the classic dusty towns. The town of Deadwood is as dirty as the dealings. Everyone should take the time and watch this series. As far as television goes, it is to westerns as Band of Brothers is to war. Simply put, 5 BIG STARS! In the immortal words of Al Swearingen, "Welcome to F_ _ _ _ _ G Deadwood!"Read full review...

love the show but the entire series collection is bad.

the show is great. anybody who hasn't seen it I recommend it (even with the use of the "F" word)and often). the entire collection in one however is really poorly done.the disc sleeves are just that "sleeves".so when you pull or push the disc in or out of them ,if they have even the smallest amount of dirt the it will force the dirt across the disc and scratch it up. so keep this in mind even if the disc are fine the first time the more often you take them out to play then return them you're just going to scratch them up way faster than normal sets and will be completely worthless.also the boxes are really cheap also. I put the one set back in the box and the bottom just busted out.I do not recommend the complete set at all!!!!!!!get each season seperatally it will be cheaper in the long run!!!!Read full review...

Favorite Show of All Time

I bought this set for the bonus features because I've seen the series five times. Wish the powers at HBO had been able to see it's greatness. They lost a treasure.

Can't stop watching

The series is a great watch. One of the best series I have ever watched (twice). On the down side, the ending is not satisfying at all and the profanity is over the top most episodes. Still overall, I loved watching Deadwood.Read full review...

Heavy drama, language, sexual content

Arrived ahead of time, well wrapped, great packaging. Just started to watch, and this is not your family style western -- this is down deep and realistic.
