The Cream of the Crop
As a huge fan of David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Bridge on the River Kwai" I thought that was all there was to his work in the modern era. But when I went looking for information on the 1970's Eric Carmen song "All By Myself", the Wikipedia entry mentions that the melody is from the same Rachmaninoff concerto as the old black-and-white film "Brief Encounter" uses as its love theme.
Curious, I went looking into this film and found it was directed by none other than David Lean and, digging still more, I found that he had this whole body of black-and-white films form the World War II era I'd never heard of before. So I found "Blithe Spirit" at my local library and this led into "Brief Encounter" and, well, you get the idea.
To make a long story short, these films are not only outstanding, they are indispensable for any connoisseur of the film medium's power to bring us out of our isolated loneliness and feel human again. I consider them to be on par in terms of quality with any of the films of Akira Kurosawa and I only wish more Americans still knew of these films.
PS: While you're at it, check out Charles Laughton in "Hobson's Choice" -- another one of David Lean's excellent directorial works, and I dare say possibly even more enjoyable than the films in this box set.Read full review...
