Why is this remote better than the one that probably came with your DirecTV
For some reason, the standard remote provided with the Genie receivers comes as infrared (IR) only. These remotes have both IR and radio frequency (RF) capability. Fairly easily set up on the DirecTV menu, selecting RF mode means that the remote doesn't have to be pointed directly at the receiver. The RF mode also operates at longer distance than IR.
Except for the red sticker on the plastic packaging, I don't know how one can determine whether the existing remote is IR-only, but it probably is. Why DirecTV supplies different models that appear idenrical is a mystery to me, but I'm not in charge of these things.
These new IR/RF remotes are incredibly inexpensive and the supplied batteries are fresh. Even without the RF capability, sometimes having a second remote in different parts of the room can be handy, notwithstanding the possible dangers of dueling remote battles.
