Great medium priced lens

Great medium model lens. Picture quality is good. Zooming is nice a firm. USM, although it is a micro USM and not a Ring USM like on the L lenses, it's still quiet, it just doesn't focus as fast. Image stabilizer is rather noisy though so if you plan to video with this lens and the onboard speaker, it's a bad combo. I'm glad this lens has IS though. The lens body feels sturdy and tough.

The seller sold it to me as advertised, lightly used, and it still looked and operated like brand new. This lens is the missing link between the starter telephoto and L series lenses.

Read full review...

Great condition and value

My wife is an amateur photographer and is learning how to use different lenses and techniques. This was a great purchase and a quality preowned lenses seemed like the best way to go.

fantastic lens

Great lens, easy to use and quick delivery, the optics are top notch, lens hood makes it a bit long for the case. Should come with a lens case but does not. Easy to handle, and quick to focus. Takes clear pictures right through its focal lengths.Read full review...

Overpriced for what it is

Competing Lenses:

70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS
55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
70-200mm L f/4

The 70-300 is in between the 55-250 & 70-200L in price, build and image quality.

70-300 pros

USM (but no ring USM & FTM)
Better built than 55-250
Will work with full frame
Has IS

70-300 cons

IQ comparable to 55-250 at almost double the price
Built & IQ not as good as 70-200L at almost the same price

If you have a crop sensor camera go with the 55-250, otherwise the 70-200L is a good choice.

If you need IS and the extra 100mm then the 70-300 is worth considering.

Better than expected

Because this is not an L lens, I wasn't sure how good the quality was, but w a monopod it's very sharp.

Amazing Telephoto Lens for the Money

After reading some really positive reviews of this lens, I decided it was well worth the $150(ish) to give it a try. I already have a Sigma 70-300mm that performed much better than Canon's kit telephoto, but it still wasn't amazing. The promise of image stabilization sealed the deal. I've since put the lens through its paces, snapping events, portraits, and some wildlife, and I'm incredibly happy. Totally worth the investment. Autofocus is pretty snappy and relatively quiet, zoom action is smooth, images are sharp, and the image stabilization is a godsend for handheld shooting. I'm sure it's not as amazing as an L-series telephoto, but for a hobbyist like me, it's an incredible deal.Read full review...

Great lens for a budget minded user

I am not a professional by any measure, but I have taken some great pictures in the first day I’ve had this lens. Have not experienced any noisy operation like other reviewers, just a fast sharp lens.

Well worth the price if you can get it for less than $450.

I went through two other lenses on my T3i before deciding on this one. First was the EF III 75-300mm which worked quite well. Focus was decently fast and was a bit lighter. Second was the 75-300mm IS USM lens which took great pictures, but, to my surprise, was a bit slow on the focus. IS was a nice touch, though. But when I put this lens on, I was well aware that the extra $100 or so was well spent. Shots are snappy, focus is quick and pictures are great! IS has two modes now, stand still and motion which is a nice feature.

Two things to remember with this lens:
Turn AF off to retract the lens (focus ring)
Turn AF on to keep it there when storing (so it doesn't slide out).

You DO NOT want to force the focus ring with AF on!
