This model fails

I have been a fan of many canon cameras and continue to happily use non-water proof canon cameras. HOWEVER, I have purchased 4 working used Canon D10 cameras and they have all FAILED after one or two times of use!! Usually they fail during the actual use in the water. I am not deep and the doors are securely fastened. I will never buy another Canon underwater camera!Read full review...

Can't go wrong with this camera. Great underwater and land camera.

My wife went snorkeling for the first time in Hawaii and the fish were so colorful we wanted to capture and re-live the feeling with a quality underwater camera. I love all the features of the camera and the versatility of being able to use it also as a land camera. Picture and video quality is fantastic. It has the same features as a land camera so the learning curve is virtually nil. I recommend getting a couple of extra memory cards and definitely a backup battery with all the zooming you will do. One feature I would change on the camera is adding rubber grip strips where your fingers hold the camera. I am looking into adding something myself so I have a better grip on the camera underwater.Read full review...

Fills a niche well

We bought this camera for a trip to Oahu. Primarily to take underwater photos of turtles and tropical fish. It gets the job done as well as other offerings in the same category. I used it at depths as great as 42 feet though it is rated for only 10 meters or 33 feet. The competition generally being rated to only 10 feet. I rated it four stars because the autofocus is a bit slow and the frame rate is limited to about a shot every few seconds. Generally if shooting in a surge current I found it a good idea to shoot a dozen images to get two or three keepers. Image quality was great on the surface and good underwater. Images on the surface suffered from the small lens diameter if there was a few drops of water clinging to the lens cover. You will not generally be able to get National Geographic quality underwater images but will be able to rival postcards occasionally.Read full review...

This fun, cute and convenient little waterproof camera takes great photos!

This model is superior to the newest version of it. The shape is so much nicer to hold and to look at and the lens situated in the centre front is much better placed than near the top corner as many similar cameras - no chance of accidentally putting a finger in the way when taking underwater or action shots! This is a fantastic little waterproof camera which has a large number of settings for all situations and takes an excellent picture. I preferred to track down this unique model as opposed to the newer version. I have used it swimming in huge surf where it has taken quite a battering, out in the open ocean swimming with humpback whales, and snorkeling with vividly coloured tropical fish amongst coral reefs. It produces excellent colour on the underwater setting. Also very good out of the water!Read full review...

Minor adjustments, but overall AWESOME CAMERA!

We bought this camera because A. It is the only one that can go down to 33' of water without housing. Olympus can only go to 10'. B. It takes awesome land pictures as well, and C. the price was right. I love that its a 12.1 mega pixel and the auto display automatically picks the right scenic mode. Like if you were shooting a flower you don't have to go to menu select "foliage" it automatically picks it. The shape could be an improvement. Its very bubbly and hard to hold at times. The speaker is on the bottom and thats where I rest my thumb to hold it. The volume can improve...when we play back videoes I can hardly hear it. I will be posting a review on Amazon too with pictures. The charger is compact and convenient to carry with you. Overall, this camera ROCKS!Read full review...

It's a good durable Camera!!

Yes its little bulkier than all other camera from the past 10 years. If you don't mind the slightly thicker camera, then this is one bad ass camera. It's strong, easy to use, takes good pictures and can take a beating. I plan for this to be fishing, camping, hiking and the ok for my kids to use camera. It can take it. I wish they made the accessories more available individually instead of in a whole kit. Other than that it's a sweet little camera that i don't have to worry about!Read full review...

durable camera

We are avid boaters so a water proof camera is a must. The Canon is more durable than our Olympus, but you trade off a little on bulky size. The Canon Takes great pictures and is easy to use, only reason for 4 stars is it is a little larger than most digital compacts.Read full review...

Takes Complication Out of Picture Taking!

Okay, so this is my first underwater camera. I'm pretty much a camera novice yet I have had many cameras that I didn't like because they were too difficult to operate. I also don't like the slowness that most cameras suffer from. I like to take pictures one after another sometimes. This one takes awesome pictures and it seems to know the best settings.

I bought this camera to take on my upcoming cruise to the Cayman Islands. I also wanted something that I could use in my pool. I wanted a camera that shoots consecutive pictures fast, records good videos (with sound) as well as good stills. I wanted to make sure I found one that would take a beating and work underwater. This camera does all of these. Right out of the box, without making any adjustments or tweaking any settings I recorded my first video in the pool. here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvCpT-Q3_1o (remember, I'm a novice and this is my first Youtube upload, ever).

If you are going to get this camera, I also would recommend 4 or five extra batteries, and 4 or 5 extra 4 GB SDHC cards if you plan to be on long excursions. You should buy SDHC cards, but SD cards will also work (they just don't write/transfer as fast). You may also want to get a camera case as well to protect your investment.

I would recommend this camera for the novice or the pro-shooter. It definitely exceeded my expectations!

Canon waterproof digitalPowershot works great!

This camera fit a specific need for my offshore fishing business. Its not only compact, and easy to operate, but also able to withstand the rigors of bouncing around a boat. The main fearure I purchased it for was the water tolerance. Not only is this camera able to take being splashed while on the boat, I can take it snorkleing down to 33'. Ontop of all this harsh enviorment features, its 12 megapixel is good for high quality photo's, and good video.
There are many more features built into the processor that I will likely never use such as an indicator to tell you if someone had their eyes closed! The zoom is on the limited size since its a waterproof unit, and the mechanics of it must be internal, but the range it does have is certainly better than a 'point and shoot'. This canera would make a very good all around camera, especially for the adventurous type that finds themself camping, hiking, fishing, etc., but also good for those with young ones that like to be involved in photography, since its shock resistant to 4' plus. I a have full sized digital Canon SLR, with all of the different lenses, and its great for specilized photography, by this little Canon offers a lot in a little package.

D10 and underwater shooting

UPDATE: After the second use for snorkeling it worked for a couple of shots and then locked with the "lens error, restart camera" message. I contacted Canon and sent it in for warranty repair. After I got it back, it worked for a couple of test shots. I didn't use it again until this spring and another snorkeiling vacation. After 6 underwater shots, the LED went dead. Now its not under warranty and the repair cost is $190. Used three times, one warranty repair and a second failure,; not a very good quality record Canon.

I bought this camera specifically for underwater photos and I didn't want to fumble around with clumsy underwater cases that I've used in the past. I chose this camera because it had a decent point and shoot (on land) rating as well. I used it for snorkeling shots for a week in Maui followed by a week in Kauai. Then my son and his wife used it for another week in Maui. It operated flawlessly with no leaks wwhatsoever. We were very careful to clean it in fresh water after every use. A very pleasant surprise was the sound quality in video mode. I was recording some turtles that were in the area and the camera picked up the whale songs that we were treated to extremely well. The video was so-so because the water was a bit cloudy due to high surf but the sound quality was very, very good.

The only drawback was that the digital portion of the zoom range had significant noise as is the case with most point and shoot cameras. Otherwise, well done Canon (even though my digital SLR and glass are Nikon).
So far, so good!

Great camera, great price, great pictures. Would recommmend to buy.

I go on vacation once or twice a year and it usually involves snorkeling. I always wanted an underwater camera to take videos and pictures. This camera exceeded my expectations. It is easy to use under water. I was switching between pic and video mode while snorking with no problems or issues. Camera also takes great pics on land. I would recommend that anyone buying this camera thoroughly read the manual and practice using it before taking it snorkeling. Wash the camera in fresh water after swimming in the ocean. Remove batteries if camera is not going to be used for a long period of time. Also understand that the battery/memory compartment has a gasket which needs care when opening and closing to ensure proper waterproofing of the camera. Taking care of the camera will allow for many years of enjoyment of underwater pics.Read full review...
