great printer; reliable and economical to operate

The first one of these I had lasted 13 years. When it finally started to fail, I bought another one.

It's been a very reliable printer for me, and I like that toner cartridges and toner refills and replacement drums are cheap. It's a tad tricky to set up under Linux, but eventually worked for me after (a) resetting network settings to factory default, (b) hooking it up to a network with a DHCP server, (c) booting the printer with the Ethernet plugged in, (d) waiting a few minutes, (e) printing a settings page and observing the IP address assigned, then (f) configuring the printer via Linux printer settngs.Read full review...

The Brother HL-2270DW is the best low end printer that I found to date!

This has been one of our best printers. We purchased the printer so we could cut down on color costs as it only prints in monochrome. The quality is pretty good for the speed and lack of color. The printer has duplex and is wireless, but the features do stop there. But at the price I got it (Under $80), it is well worth it. I did donate $10 for computer software (handyprint) that makes any printer I have AirPrint compatible for use with my iPhone. To have that feature built in usually bumps up printer prices far beyond that. The only drawback is whichever system you set up for that must be running if you want to use that feature. The printer works consistently and so far I have no issues or jams to clear out. I only had it about a month with moderate use so far. Setup is ok for having to connect it directly to the computer and access the webpage used to configure it. It does come with software, but the mac version is outdated (not compatible with current Mac OS)and you will have to do it manually this way. The instructions that come with it, or found on the Brother support site, has a clear step by step guide for doing this. I definitely recommend this printer for those that are cost conscious without taking away most features found on similar higher-end basic printers.Read full review...

reliable, low per-page cost

The biggest advantage of this printer is that cheap toner is available. Also, although the printer will stop working and insist that you replace the toner prematurely, it is easy to override this, and so get maximum use of the toner cartridge. Paper jams are rare. Print quality and speed are adequate, though probably you can do better if that's a priority. I purchased a printer with an A4 tray, and replaced it with the letter-size tray from my old printer. Same size tray, and I didn't have to change any settings to get it to recognize the new tray. The used printer I purchased had a static IP address. In order to get it to work on my home network, I had to reset to factory settings. Information on how to do this is on the web, and in the service manual.Read full review...

Easy set-up, so far so good.

I dumped my one year old HP 8000 wireless inkjet when it became obvious it was going to cost me two hundred dollars a year for even minimum use. You can read my review on that pig's product page for more details.

As with most users I have no expertise in wireless. Every time I add a device, it's plug-and-pray time. My network is run through an old Asus router which supports only WEP and WPA, not WPS. I don't know exactly what that means, other than that WPS apparently is a new standard which improves the installation process. My home network has slowly grown to inlude a W7 desktop, a Vista laptop, two other XP desktops (I never throw away old computers), one wireless adapter for my TV and bluray player, and one wireless printer.

I have to say that this Brother printer was the easiest installation experience I have ever had with any piece of wireless hardware. For once, a manufacturer went to obvious effort to make certain the manual was clear and coherent. Every step on every page is exactly representative of what was shown on the screen [Update: Mac users, see Rich Hayhurst's comment (below)]. Every paragraph is bulleted so that if you are directed to skip a step based on your particular configuration there is no confusion as to where to proceed.

The net result is that, though I could not use what is billed as the one-button WPS setup and had to input the SSID and network key manually (I'm glad I wrote those down a couple years ago when I first set up the router), the Brother printer was recognized and up and running on all three active computers in less than twenty minutes, total. All for little more effort than inserting the installation disk in each drive.

The print quality is excellent, the automatic duplex functions flawlessly, the machine is fast, quiet and has a very small footprint. I am hoping its economy and durability live up to the rest of my initial experience with this great little printer.

Economics

I have bought 2 Brother printers for less than $60 and they have been good. I paid $125 for this one which was refurbished. Brother has new ones for half this price but the changed the toner cartridge so it will not work in my old printers. I print copies for older people in my area that can't afford computers and we have no daily newspaper. I feel like I was forced to pay twice the new price so I could use toners I have stocked up before my printer malfunctioned. I am just an 86 year old trying to help others.Read full review...

Great Laser Printer for the Price - Dependable and Duplex plus Wireless abl

I purchased this printer in Mar 2014 mainly to print postage on ebay. Inkjet just doesnt work for label/postage because most is not moisture proof and Ive just never like inkjet anyway. Back to the gray scale of laser .. but at least its a stable image that wont wear off like a lot of Thermal Printers !!

FYI .. never buy a "used" Thermal Printer, ppl are selling them for a reason .. theres a part that wears out and the image prints light. I didnt use it right away, so got ripped off on that one.

Ok, this printer has really good reviews and looked at the cost of toner, drums and parts overall .. all very reasonably prices.

This printer has been on the market for years, so its proven itself, was only 80 shipped and should have support for toner etc for some time to come.

Love the Duplex, it prints one side, retracts it back in and prints the second side.

Its also a network printer/wireless although I dont have mine hooked up .. yeah technically challenged in that direction.

Print quality is fine for any for of personal or business use other than specialty printing. I have not tested it for print density or edge crispness .. something thats needed for the printing trades that use printers to make negatives positives.

The only 2 things that would make this printer better is 2 extra paper inputs, 1 for paper or label sheets, another for envelopes. Secondly, Color sure would be nice to have for a small business creating a lot of things in-house.

Im not sure if anyone else has this problem, when printing multiple documents they start falling of the tray on top after just a few prints, yeah its a pain!

Six months in of light printing .. Its time to change the lower volume laser toner cartridge which I keep pushing because Ive read so much on how to get more copies out of your cartridge after the printer says change toner. Generic Toner also says not to mix toner and to dump the old Toner... All, I have to say is hmmm on that one .. the toner should be almost near a duplicate being sold for any particular printer and we should not have to be concerned about mixing toners. So I havent changed toner yet. Perhaps I should of waited to grade this, but while looking for toner this request popped up. Good luck !!

Dependable, High-Quality, Long Product Life, Low Cost

GREAT printer for the price! I have now purchased four of these over three years. I gave it 4/5 for speed and print quality because there are faster printers and some with tad better quality, but they cost significantly more (for instance our BizHub 423 beats it in both print quality and speed, but it costs in the thousands of dollars!) I contend the difference in print quality between an expensive printer and this one is not that huge, I mean this printer makes a GOOD document. I have not experienced paper jams outside of ones human intervention has caused. I have had one odd failure, where the internal mirror got fogged up on the left side, either that or is misaligned. I have owned or purchased about twenty low- to mid-priced Brother laser printers over the past eight years and I have *never* seen this happen before. The printer in question sits in an area open to machining activity, so I'm 99-percent convinced it's an environment-related issue.

The wireless connection has been VERY handy and easy to set up in a computer using its NODE name, allowing the printer IP address to be given via DHCP and not having to remember which IPs are already reserved.

DUPLEX: works great! Again, no jams, but if one were to occur, It would be more likely to happen here.

You should get (at least) two, three or more years' service out of the 2270DW. All printers wear out eventually, these printers (and Brother printers in general) will give you your money's worth. Our oldest Brother is an HL-5240 laser from 2006 and it's still in service.

Great printer; Set up using Brother's driver, not Windows "Plug n Play driver.

This printer is very good. However, it has Terrible support. At least my experience was terrible. First, it took significant time to find out how to connect my printer wirelessly to my home network without using a computer as a "server" (Meaning it had to be on to for the attached printer to print), or needing to move the printer near to the pc so I install it using a USB cable temporarily. Once I figured that out, it worked fine. Or at least it did until I tried to print duplex. When i did that, the printer would start but not even feed paper, claiming I had a paper jam. Fact is, I didn't. After several tries at getting support to fix this, the recommendation was "Take the printer to an authorized service shop". Problem was, even though it was a new printer, i didn't come from an "Authorized" dealer, so I would get to pay for that. To me, that meant throw it out. But, I decided to research more thoroughly. I found out that for Windows 10, there are two different drivers. Turns out, one doesn't support duplex (and maybe other things) and one does. One is the windows "plug n play driver, and it turned out to be the cause of the problem. The other is the one provided from the Brother website. That one works like a charm. Be careful you use that driver and you will be very happy with this printer.Read full review...

Good value for the money

Purchased to use for run-of-the-mill B&W rather than using my Canon 9000 Pro. Serves that purpose well. Like others have said it has a cheap plastic "feel" so wonder how it will stand up ... only time will tell.

Setup for USB was fast and simple. Wireless a different story.

Pros: Fast, low cost, auto duplex
Cons: Print seems a little light at times, envelope printing touchy, software for print configuration could be better

Overall I'm satisfied, mostly because the initial cost and per print cost both very low. I can easily live with the rest.

Best all around Wi-fi enabled printer.

Must have for wifi-enabled home computing. The wifi connectivty is easy to setup following the instructions from the manual. You can print anywhere and anytime in the house without a glitch. Print jobs are queued convenietly if turned off, and resumes once the printer in turned on. The price is a real bargain without any sacrifice for convenience, quality, reliability, and ease of functionality.

The duplex feature is a breeze, automatic, no need to flip papers, it prints on both sides. Nice access for mailing envelopes and stationaries. Toner cartridge is easy to remove and replace. Paper tray keeps things orderly and easy to reload.
