So good I have two (sort of)

Having been engineering as a hobby for about 18 years now, I have worked my way through various mixers from analogue to digital, small format to large, built in EFX and off-board processing. My big step change came in being an early adopter of the Mackie DL1608 (pretty much fully controlled from an iPad) which cut the amount of equipment I needed to carry down enormously, whilst giving me more functionality that the big analogue desk I had before. After three years' of use I decided that for some of the festivals I was doing I needed something with more inputs and an actual control surface (mostly for others who were assisting). Thus, I bought the Behringer X32 Compact and an S16 digital snake. I really enjoy using it for the additional functionality and sound quality it gives over the Mackie and wanted to carry that over into my smaller pub gigs where the Compact would be a bit of a burden and attracts too much attention, thus replacing the Mackie. It made complete sense to get the X32 Rack which I could carry my shows over to and have all the ins and outs of the Compact. In addition, I can use it as a replacement for the S16 for the larger gigs where I have a dedicated mix position.

Since I am used to using the iPad as a control surface for the Mackie and have used it with the Compact for monitor set up, etc. it made it very easy to invest in the X32 Rack as I knew I was able to work with the app in a live environment. Plus, one of the venues I occasionally work at has the X32 Core with S16s for input, and in fact that is where my S16 went when I got the Rack.

So, a bit about the brand. Behringer get some mixed press for their products, they are typically good value, but the build quality has not always been great and the sound quality not always up their with other players in the market. Also, quite a lot of 'copying' appeared to occur of other products. However, the X32 was a joint project with MIDAS and Klark-Technik and was essentially a ground up design and was meant as a game changer, which is has been. There is pretty much nothing else to touch this range of products in this price bracket and the permutations are ridiculous, especially when you consider you can also mix and match with the MIDAS M32 series of equipment as well. The build quality is great, the updates to the firmware and apps are frequent and it is still developing as a product in terms of features.
