If it's fast, it might not be full

This provides quick and easy lessons for learning phrases that are useful in everyday speech. It is handy for learning how to begin conversations and for responding to simple practical questions. Despite the earlier publishing date of the version I purchased (1997), the colorful pictures in each chapter still are relevant enough to help make word associations in building common and simple vocabulary. It would be a good book to obtain if traveling to Italy for a short visit, but it stops there.

I would not recommend this book as a basic primer for learning the language. It lacks any comprehensive set of grammar rules and is necessarily brief on language explanations. What it does not provide, for example, are conjugations of verb tenses other than in the present. It also does not have a very extensive glossary or dictionary. The words it does define are restricted to those often used in situations regarding introductions, dining, transportation, accommodations, special occasions and emergencies.

I was anticipating a little more, but I should have paid attention to the title. When it says "Learn Italian the fast . . . way," take heed. Fast should not be interpreted as a secret or slick entry into the language. A fuller understanding requires a more balanced approach. This could serve as a complement to first lessons or an introductory course in Italian, but it lacks too many of the basic principles to stand alone.Read full review...

Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way

I'm taking an Italian class and the Berlitz textbook is all in Italian - very hard to understand what it is asking you to do. What is great about this book is that it's written in English with very easy and fun instructions and it also spells out the pronunciation of the words. It also has pictures that correspond to the words which helps immensely.Read full review...
