two great films, not much else included

I purchased this combo because my VHS copy of "Anne of the Thousand Days" has been watched so many times it's now warped. I was excited the see the special features included with the two great classic movies, but was sorely disapointed. All that is included are the original theatrical trailers and one on the Mary Queen of Scots disc for "Elizabeth: The Golden Age", with the usual optional subtitles and dubbing options. So, in conclusion, buy the DVD set for the archival quality but don't expect much else.Read full review...

Truly timeless classic movies

I have always been interested about the way of the Royal courts od old; as my lineage goes back to these times and a Royal bloodline.
The insight into the lives of the Boleyn family has been a wonder for hundreds of years. These two movies with some of the best actors and actresses of all time are a treasure. The sets amazing, and costumes so beautifully done. With renewed interest to this period due in part to "The Tudors" and with the new movie "The Other Boleyn Girl" to released.... it is proof of the wonderment that the life of Anne Boleyn still it brings. Even with these new productions, these movies are still outstanding yet today. Anne Boleyn the mother of Queen Elizabeth I of England it became just as Anne spoke; her daughter would make a better ruler than any man and build a better, stronger England. It became so (the power of words) "The Golden Age"! "Mary Queen of Scots" goes deeper into the story regarding Mary's weakness and strengths, and as her son James became King of England after the death of Elizabeth I. Cate Blachett does a wonderful "Elizabeth I" and the movie "Mary Queen of Scots" sets the tone for those movies; fills in the gaps in history. All of the above mentioned productions are all wonderful and all lend itself to the others. If you enjoy "The Tudors" on showtime and Cate as Elizabeth I in both movies these movies are a "must have" to complete the picture in history. Bravo.... to all these films!
No regrets in buying these films together; a bonus! Sara

Post Script: If Henry VIII knew it was the male that determined the sex of his offspring would he have beheaded himself?????

Compelling Drama

I loved this movie-the costumes were as beautiful as the actors! Both movies were great and I will be enjoying them as part of my movie collection.

Good value for 2 movies.

Both are good. Anne of the Thousand days is good, but there are better movies and tv shows covering Henry VIII and Anne (Six Wives of Henry VIII, Tudors). I found Mary, Queen of Scots more interesting.Read full review...

Intriguing History

These 2 movies play like a part 1 and part 2 following done of the history of Henry VIII. Anne of One Thousand days is Anne Boyln and shows her rise and fall. Mary Queen of Scotts shows Anne’s and Henry’s daughter -Mary- and her reign in dealing with her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. Great actors and acting in these period pieces. Read full review...

Loved Anne of the Thousand Days

Anne of the Thousand Days..Loved it! Burton and Bujold excellent...costumes beautiful. One of my all time favorite movies.

Mary Queen of Scotts...not so good...I love Timothy Dalton but not in this role at all. Movie was just a bit 'off'
Worth the money just for Anne of the 1000 Days

An excellent film but not altogether accurate past

I am a historian and have keen interest and knowledge of 14th,15th and 16th century events. These movies include an all-star cast, show the volatile temperments of King Henry VIII and Ann Bolin. It also shows in truth that it was Henry, and not his advisors, that brought about the most political and religious changes in England. All over the love of one woman, Ann Bolin. Mary Stewart (Mary Queen of Scots)played by Vanessa Redgrave, shows a woman who truly ruled with the heart and not the head. Her relationship with Queen Elizabeth, though not historically correct, shows the underlying love and respect each had for the other. Also, the movie shows Queen Mary as the demure fem-fatale, easily influenced by the men in her life losing her rule, while Queen Elizabeth never let any man rule her. Excellent movies. Not historically accurate but entertaining.Read full review...
