A venerable classic

I got a great deal on a couple of these just before last Christmas. I love 414's. For voice-over, instruments, or vocals, they're a go-to mic as far as I'm concerned. Pair of overheads on drums, great. Room mic when doing guitars, great. Doing a special remote? (interview) Great. It's really a desert island mic. That's why I picked up two when on sale. The XLS doesn't have the upper freq bump like the XL2 which is akin to the TL2 (now discontinued) Choose your flavor, and smart shopping.Read full review...

THE mic to get! (Trumpet player/horn arranger)

I chose the XLS model since I'm trumpet player and want a flatter high-end response compared to XLII. The setting in between hyper-cardioid and figure-8 has the body and brilliance that I wanted, and the sound is super clean with the pass-filter and attenuation settings. I will not go back to my ribbon after this!Read full review...

If your recording or doing live sound, this is one of the best.

If you are looking for a high end mic that is versital, this is the one. Put a pair of these in a piano and you can hear the difference. Even if you have just one like me, you'll use it just about anything. Acoustic instruments from cello to flute will stand out like never before. This mic has withstood the test of time as it is still currently available. This mic also has an excellent resale value.Read full review...

Very versatile.

I love how versatile this mic is. With all of the different polar patterns, pads, and filters on this mic the sound can be shaped to perfection before recording. It is a warm mic, but depending on what you are seeking that just might work for your needs. I have not heard the XL11 which is more suited for vocals, but I think this sounds pretty good on them as well. I have only had this for a week, but it is already one of my favorite mics ever.Read full review...

Surgical Sound

You're going to get a very detailed frequency capture with this mic. It's not going to make you sound good or bad. It's just going to give you a lot to work with in Post-production, so if you're skilled in that area you will like / succeed with this unit. Solid as a rock and very pleased with the package contentsRead full review...

Awesome

Superb Acoustic and amplifier microphone, for the money my favorite on acoustical guitar, I have many high end microphones and use this one the most of all of them. Versatile and sounds fantastic, I would put it up against any mic and it won't break you. 100%Read full review...
