Colin Firth plays George, an English professor who lost his lover of sixteen years one year ago today. His lover was Jim and the year is 1962. George can no longer cope with the grief over his loss as he is all but friendless in California, nobody except his longtime friend Charley (Julianne Moore) knows he is gay so he cannot express his emotions in public, his colleagues don't even know that he has lost a friend, never mind a longtime lover as he has to put on a brave face and continue with life as best as he can.

A possible friendship outside of college with a student may be the only thing that can save George as he has decided today will be his last day and that he will shoot himself on the anniversary of his lovers death. So as you can imagine this is not the cheeriest of movies around, it is however, fantastically well acted. Colin Firth gives another in a series of magnificent performances as George, where Julianne Moore more than holds her own as Charley, the friend who has plenty of problems of her own and drinks to try to forget them.

Don't go into this movie expecting a happy beginning, middle or ending, but watch it for the great performances.Read full review...

The title leaves a lot unsaid about the maina character in the movie

The movie is good, and i will make you want to read the book, which is even better.

The movie is based on Christopher Isherwood’s book of the same name. I watched the movie as soon as it was available on DVD. So now I’m excited to own my own copy. And in high definition.

Disappointed
