The only true Zeldaish game on the PS3

The game is a strange concept You first start out now Earth looking for your family member well if you play ELLEN shes looking for her Mom I haven't played the Professor his name is KEATS He's searching for an answer to the Occult?.Strange yes but anyway the game then turns weird you are transported to the NetherWorld but you will get used to it.The game kinda reminds me of Fable accept the game is completely different in Genre. The game has a choice of Keats or Ellen and they both have different quests that have to be played out you can also buy more Quests from the PSN network for between $1.99 to $5.99. Cool idea wish more RPG's had this in it. And another thing that I like is you can use the Dual Shock 3 Controller while in battles all you do is tilt your controller back and forth until the enemy is gone cool feature for a 1st Generation Action Adventure game that is like The Legend Of Zelda. Well anyway I give this game a 8.5 for the Originality and idea Great game Sony!. We need More games like this in the future!Pick it up you won't be disappointed!Read full review...

Great game! But not exactly what the demo suggests...

I played the demo for this game before it was released and was instantly hooked on the action, the beautiful graphics and the imaginative use of the sixaxis to capture folks. Owning the (full) game has changed my perception a bit...

If you were a big fan of the fast pace action of the demo, then you can expect the game to go at a slower pace than you bargained for. Whereas the demo drops you right into the fray of the Netherworld, the full story is much more involving with the main plot being a mystery of a murder which brings our 2 heroes to a strange, desolate town. The story is very interesting and for anyone who enjoys a good mystery like myself, this game will keep you engaged apart from the action. However, the method of the telling of this story is mostly through comic book cut scnenes, which does not allow for the connection with the characters that your typical RPG cinematics offer.

With that being said, the graphics, music and visual effects of the game are spectacular and get even more exciting than the demo, and capturing new folks (the enemies) and increasing their powers to battle awesome Folklores (the bosses) never gets tiring. The game does not allow chapters to be re-played, but having 2 (differing) characters POV's and quite a few side quests does allow for good playback, though it still seemed a bit short for my taste.

Overall, it is an enticing story with a good mix of action and mystery, and even if the comic book scenes do not connect the player with the characters, there is a lot of fun to be had. I would not spend the $50-60 to buy it new, but now it is a great bargain game to play/own for any fans of Action/RPG's.

Psychopomp, the video game

I rented Folklore, not really sure what to expect. It had received stellar reviews, but so had Bioshock and Halo 3, which were both the definition of mediocre video games. I am similarly cautious of games highly influenced by Japanese design conceits, because I don't get along well with Japanese video game culture.

I am always pleased when I am cautious for no reason.

Folklore is a little darling of a game . . . it has a charm that I couldn't hope to explain myself. I look at it time and again and I think to myself "Kingdom Hearts wishes it was this game." The story is not particularly deep, but it is an excellent mystery. The two playable characters of the game, Ellen and Keats, are looking into a murder that happens in an Irish village by the name of Doolin -- Ellen is seeking her long lost mother, and Keats is investigating the village for the magazine he writes for. What makes them unique amongst investigators is that they have the ability to travel to the afterlife and speak with the dead, which cuts down on a lot of the guesswork when solving murders.

The afterlife as depicted in Folklore is a complex place -- myths of many cultures shape and are shaped by human perception. Most of Folklore's gameplay comes with exploring these areas and doing battle with their denizens -- in order to progress through the game, Ellen and Keats must pick up the correct powers from the denizens they absorb the abilities from. Hints exist, but most of the exploration is left to the player.

The other side of gameplay is the actual footwork of solving the murder, which involves questioning the residents of Doolin and figuring out who did what and why. As with the standard murder mystery, it is far more complex than 'Victim stole Murderer's lollipop, so he wanted revenge.'

I purchased Folklore after failing to finish it on the first rent, and I have been happy with my choice. Folklore can be rushed through for story alone, or it can be doggedly scoured to find each and every level up and power enhancement in the game, which requires some 'grinding' but also puzzle-solving. There are optional sidequests, and downloadable content that offers new costumes for the characters and new powers for combat.

As to the gripes, I have a few: the story mostly rolls out in a sort of dynamic comic book form, which proceeds just a hair slower than my reading speed, which results in me tapping the fast-forward button during the cutscenes about every 3/4 of second to get things moving. That's damn annoying. This game also has one of the infamous design conceits I cannot stand -- the story and the gameplay feel disconnected. The characters and enemies are in totally different areas, cordoned off by load screens, and ne'er the two shall meet. I feel very strongly like the story was a designer's brilliant vision, and that every so often he deigns to allow me to fiddle with the controller for 20 minutes before the next scene of his magnum opus appears before you. I don't feel integrated into the experience.

That being said, Folklore is still a beautiful game with a sharp story and decent gameplay. If you like your games heavy on adventure with some RPG elements, then this is the game for you.

This game will appeal to: Adventure game fans, people who like pretty games, people who like collecting powers for characters, people who who like interesting stories

This game will not appeal to: Shooting game fans, people who like high action

Unique RPG

I decided to buy this game because it was one of the few on the PS3 at the time that actually looked to be much good in my opinion. For my PS2 I have games such as Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, .hack//, Jak & Daxter, Kya etc.

Folklore will appeal to a certain audience I believe, not everyone will enjoy this game. It takes play I believe in Ireland, and revolves around a girl named Ellen and a man named Keats. Ellen is trying to discover her past that she doesn't remember and Keats is a supernatural reporter looking for a story. They discover that Doolin the town is a gateway to the Netherworld. To get a story, and the past uncovered, they continuously go to the Netherworld, fight Folks(monsters) and Folklore(boss monsters) to uncover the truth.

I'm personally really enjoying this game. I suggest if you aren't sure about it to check out some video reviews and trailers on youtube, but if you like the same kind of games I do I think you will enjoy this.

Folklore - RPG game.

I downloaded the demo from PSN and immediatelly got hooked up with this game.

It has an eerie atmosphere, and it´s kinda dark (the main reason I liked, along with the music). It reminds me of a Tim Burton movie, which I consider very cool.

The story is about a ghost village, and two characters - Ellen, a girl who is kind of introspective, and Keats, a reporter for a supernatural magazine. One day, Ellen receives a letter from her dead mother, pointing out a way to some village. At the same time, Keats receive a weird message, and decide to go to the village as well.

Upon reaching the village, they discover it is inhabited by dead people (more precisely, ghosts and souls of the dead). After talking to some weird fellas, they embark on a journey of discover, to find out what is it all about the messages each one got earlier on.

Haven´t played too much, but it´s a nice game, with nice graphics music and sounds. Controls seemed natural to me (the soul catching thing is very cool).

That´s it. I recommend downloading it from PSN and giving it a try, if you like RPG.

Woot! Folklore is great!

The PS3 game Folklore is an eery mytic type adventure game. It's very pretty, with unique creatures, spirits, and other characters, all with a very dark Alice in Wonderland style to it. I like the storyline and characters. This combined with being able to play on two different sides of the story makes the game even more interesting! The combat is great, too. Challenging and fun - not frustrating at all.
There is only one thing I really didn't expect for a video game (especially for such an expensive console like the Playstation 3) is how a lot of the story-movie parts where you are just watching instead of moving is in a still picture thing. The combat is great! Challenging and fun - not frustrating at all. Kindof like a comic book, or Anime book. It is by anime writers, after all. :) There's a ton of reading to do, but I guess that adds to the cool storybook-ness it has to it!
If you buy this game you're in for a lot of reading, and you might want a big tv because the font is swirly. Other than that, it's a beautiful and entrancing game that I think tons of people would enjoy!

Addictive! Two snaps in a Circle

This game is Legend of Zelda meets Pokemon. I just recently played this on a demo then immediately bought the game afterward. So addictive. Long time since I've played an rpg and this is a really cool one. It's not one of the greatest.. though. The sixaxys adsorb controlling is actually pretty fun. I have to give it to this game for originality. Leveling your folks can get pretty addicting.Choosing the right one to take out an opponent (Pouke I choose U!) The storyline keeps you interested..but seems to prolong it after a while. Like.. get to the point already. I'd give tihs game two snaps in a circleRead full review...

Interesting Rpg Adventure

I love the game's mystery mixed with fantasy that spices up the story. I'm used to 2D animation consoles rpgs that resemble anime, but this game uses visuals that play like an animated comic book that took me a while to get used to but it made the story more thrilling. You can play as one of two people in the game and it's up to you to decide which character you would want to play. I liked that aspect of the game because it can gave you the story through different perspectives. You can to decide which POV the story will unravel from. I loved the gameplay, I just recently got a PS3 and I didn't know there were motion sensor within the controls but you take advantage of that in this game and I found the gameplay is more fun when it's more interactive. The voice-acting is well-done, the storyline is interesting, and the gameplay is fun. I highly recommend this game to play for any rpg fan. There's not a lot of rpgs currently on the ps3 so whatever gems you can find, you should take the leap and get them. This one of the gems that's once it runs out of stores, you won't be able to find again. Get it while you can.Read full review...

This Game is amazing.

This game is amazing on every level. The beauty of the music, the beautiful art direction, amazing storyline, and wonderfully addicting and original gameplay. First off, the story starts off with Ellen, who receives a letter from her dead mother to go visit Doolin. Ellen, curious about her past, proceeds to come to this small, somewhat creepy town. Another character Keats, who is a writer for an occult magazine, gets a phone call asking him for help. Wanting to investigate this matter, Keats heads to Doolin as well. I don't want to spoil too much, but their stories collide, and this may be one of the greatest stories ever told while it asks philosophical questions about life in general. The gameplay is wildly addicting, when you defeat enemies, you can capture their Ids and use their abilities. There are over 100 abilities, ranging from elemental attacks, to destruction attacks, to combo attacks. All in all: This game is a definite buy. Support them so they can make a sequel to this beautiful and fantastic game.Read full review...

seems good

The &amp;quot;snake game&amp;amp;quot; (it has several names) is one of the simplest game concepts ever, and just like Tetris it&amp;amp;apos;s very addictive. There are a lot of variations of this game written in Flash, and this tutorial will explain one way to create it. It&amp;amp;apos;s a relatively easy game to code, but many fail to make sure that when keys are pressed in rapid succession they are all registered. This is necessary if you want to have full control of the snake at all times.Read full review...
