A simple and effective solution
I use a retired business computer for my personal computer. It is perfect for me in every way except for one - it has no Wi-Fi support. It was intended to be part of an ethernet system

It works very well within my house, a rather large house of wooden structure, which is what I bought it for. It comes with an installation CD and lists only Windows versions up to 10. Wow - what a boost !
When my wired ethernet switch went out, I temporarily started using an older 802.11N usb wireless dongle to get internet access. However, this device consistently delivers an online speed test result (download and upload) that is 5 times as fast as the older 802.11N device. I'm going to keep it installed.
