Great lens for the money.

Although this is a "L" lens for a full frame camera it works well with both full frame and APS-C DSLR. Focal length does change when attached to crop sensor camera to the approximate equivalent of 35mm when shooting at wide angle so keep that in mind. But the truth is it really doesn't matter too much so just enjoy shooting with this lens. It takes fantastic pictures with crystal clear details and can be used for any occasions. To portrait to landscape and anything in between. This is probably the least expensive Canon "L" lens available on the market. Highly recommended.Read full review...

Super carry-around lens

Canon L lenses are all superior quality and produce great images. Internal zoom and focus make this one especially nice to handle. Fast, accurate and whisper-quiet focus gives you more usable shots. Using this on my 1.6 crop 60D still provides a good wide-angle for indoor use. My 28 mm Sigma always had me backed into a corner.Read full review...

The most reasonably priced L series lens that you'll find!

Beautifully crafted lens. I loved looking at this lens. Immaculate construction. Solid like a rock.

Better than a kit lens? Well, no, not really. The kit 18-55 mm is not a bad lens and if you look
you can find one for $50. It also has a bit more range than the 17-40. Photos were sharp but
not as sharp as an 18-135 base model lens let alone a nano.

If you want to tell your friends that you have an L series lens here you go. They're not all that
pricey and they're always available.

Good, solid performer and better in low light than a kit lens.

Otherwise, get an 18-135 if you're shooting crop sensor.
They're better and cost less...

Great lens for walking around and such a different perspective at 17mm

This is my first L lens to pair with my nifty 50 and I must say I'm so glad I got it. I originally wanted the 24-105 however I am so glad I got the 17-40 for the simple fact that on a Full Frame sensor 17mm is so amazing to capture a different perspective. It doesn't seem that much from 17-24 but the perception and field of view is simply stunning. It's great for those small tight spaces where you want to capture a scene and even at 40mm lifestyle candid portraits are not to bad. Now at F4 you don't get that creamy bokeh that you would from say a 2.8 or 1.4 ect however it's still pleasing if your subject is far away from anything in the background.

The lens is very sharp and even at 40mm F4 you can still focus pretty close and is nice and sharp. There is def some dark edges at both 17 and 40mm however it's easily remedied in post processing. The focusing is super fast and locks on nicely as well. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a reasonably prices L lens who likes landscapes or just walking around and wants to capture the moment you might be in.

Canon EF 17-40 f/4 L USM lens

For any Canon user especially those into landscape photography, this is an excellent lens, very fast throughout the entire focal length. Because I use this lens for landscape photography, I love the weight of the lens.

This lens is primarily mounted to a Canon 5D Mk II as well as a Canon 7D. This lens I find a better suited for the 5D for I what I purchased it for. There are lots of other excellent alternatives, Sigma or Tamaron but ultimately I love the glass in this lens, just my preference.

Great buy overall!

Great value to quality ratio for this Canon L lens build.

Recently added this lens while looking for a wide angle shipper L alternative. The lens is well build and takes great pictures even at low light for a 4.0 just make few camera settings adjustment specially white balance for proper room light indoor pictures resulting on sharp brilliant colorful pictures. Sure will like to be 2.8 but can't afford the 16-35 2.8 II price tag at the time. Compared pictures between 5D MK II and T1i very little difference between the two, mainly on frame corners blurry commonly to wide angle lenses.Read full review...

Great lens but...

Lens is great colors look really good however the one i got has a shifted lens element so the left side of each picture is a little blurry. Cant really to much at normal size but zoomed in its noticeable. Just always test lenses before you buy them.Read full review...

Your Go-To For Still Photography!

Although it does not come with image stabilization, this lens is probably one of the best when it comes to taking still images whether it is landscape or products!

On top of that, the lens feels smooth when zooming in or focusing. It is also easy to put on & off the lens filter + lens cap.Read full review...

Great, depending on what you are using it for.

I love this lens on a crop sensor for outdoor use. Most of my photography is outdoors on backpacking and hiking trips. The durability and size of the lens are perfect for such a use. Thus, for my needs the lens works beautifully. If you are planning on working in low light, without a tripod, while photographing moving objects, and don't want to use a flash 100% of the time (e.g., the wedding scene), I would consider another lens. If you want a great touring lens that you use to shoot landscapes, buildings, and other scenic views, the 17-40 f/4L might be the lens for you. I rate the 17-40L as 'Good' because it isn't perfect for every situation; however, for the price, image quality, and build, it is excellent for some situations.Read full review...

WIDE WIDE WIDE Yeah~

This is one of my favorite lens when it comes to shooting outdoor landscape, group shots, creative, out of ordinary shots. Our normal eyes see things at about the same as 50mm lens sees. 17mm gives really wide view and often you can create some dramatic shots with it.

As a member of "L" lens, this lens uses better glass than non L lens thus it is able to produce sharper images and gives more punch color. Build quality is excellent and has water seal that works with high end professional cameras. At about $600~$700 street price, this is a great lens to keep. There's a similar lens though. Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L. It's little faster and has 1mm wider advantage, but has ticket price of almost twice as much as 17-40mm, and many people will agree that 17-40mm does well.

A complementing lens would be EF 70-200mm f/4 L along with EF 50mm f/1.4 which I own both of these lens.

Thanks for reading my review.
