Ghouls n Ghosts Cho Makaimura SNES Mini review

Ghouls n Ghosts is a 2D platformer with brutal difficulty, if you like games that challenge your gaming skills to the limit then look no further.

Plot is simple; go rescue the princess. The level design is challenging but fair, making use of the Super Nintendo hardware with some impressive mode 7 uses in the game.

The game has a good variety of enemies, from wolves to zombies, from gargoyles to demon birds the game always throws new enemies your way. And to tackle these enemies, you have a wide variety of weapons to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You can also level up these weapons as you increase your armour, granting your weapon access to even more powerful moves. You'll need these too, as any enemy that hits you will destroy your armour and leave you in your underwear totally exposed - another hit in whilst in your underwear and you loose a life! Brutal right?

The soundtrack is sublime, composed by Mari Yamaguchi who also composed Megaman 5 for the NES. This soundtrack makes good use of the SNES SPC700 chip with a very atmospheric soundtrack and a few of those songs will stick in your head - especially some of the later tracks.

In the end I really enjoyed Super Ghouls and Ghosts - I've played many games over the years and this is one that I always end up going back to for another play through.

Highly recommended, but your gaming skills will be put to the test in a big way by this game.
