Technology that is NOT Out of Date

With the world forced to enter digital, many of us are finding that our old equipment are not up to the task. Alas that is what the market wants; the newer the better although when you buy anything, it immediately is nearing obsolescence with newer models on the cutting edge. I know I got a bargain in this Sony model STR DE485 when I replaced the my old unit and was able to immediately incorporate its digital connections to my existing newer equipment. Oddly, what most concerned me is having a coaxial connector available to hook into the cable system which this unit conveniently has. I have never bought a new car for the same reasons I enjoy getting some gently used technology, all the benefits at a fraction of the price. As to 5.1 Dolby Surround and the newer format, my other equipment could not utilize that higher level of function. More is not necessarily better unless you need to and can afford to always be on the cutting edge; for now it feels like my theater sound has advanced to its highest level!Read full review...

Great Receiver - 6 years and still going strong!

I can't say enough good things about this product. It's served me well over the 6 years I've owned it, providing excellent surround sound in my movie enjoyment. Sure, it doesn't have the fancy HDMI inputs of modern receivers, but it delivers crisp, digital sound. Plain and simple. I have my Sony upconvert DVD player hooked up via coaxial and my cable box over optical for digital sound from HD channels. I enjoy the blue "Decoding" light in the center of the receiver. This was Sony's low-end unit in 2002, and it's been great. You can also label the AV inputs; I have my Apple Airport Express hooked up to it as well for wireless audio, so I labeled the CD input "ITunes" and it shows up on the display when the input is selected. Intuitive and easy-to-use, gets the job done. You don't need 7.1 Channel Surround Sound. 5.1 is all you need.Read full review...
